About Elise

Bonjour!

I'm a native French speaker based in Melbourne, and I've been tutoring privately for four years. I love teaching French - every student learns differently, and my job is to find your way in.

In my classes there's no silly question and no wrong turn: just curiosity, patience, and real progress at your pace.

My background: two years in Hypokhâgne / Khâgne (France's most rigorous literary prep), two Master's in French Literature, and six years as a published journalist for French and European publications.

The French I teach is the French of real writing and real culture. Alive, current, useful.

About the lesson

French shouldn't sound like homework. It should sound like you - confident in a Paris meeting, comfortable ordering wine in Bordeaux, fluent enough to lose a friendly debate in Lyon.

I offer French conversation classes for learners who want to speak more naturally, more confidently, and about the things that actually matter to them.

How a class works:
We talk. About your interests, your week, your work, whatever we want to explore that day. Relaxed and encouraging - just a real conversation, at your pace.
As we go, I take notes on the mistakes you make, new vocabulary that comes up, and phrases worth remembering. You get those notes after class to review on your own time.
The following week, we start by reusing the vocabulary from the last session - so it actually sticks - then move into new territory. We work on pronunciation as we go. You have my full focus for the whole session.

What we can talk about:
- Sessions are shaped around what matters to you.
- Culture and society: literature, cinema, art, current affairs, philosophy, politics, music
- Everyday conversation and general fluency
- Business or professional French
- Preparation for a trip to a French-speaking country
- A specific objective (interviews, presentations, DELF/DALF oral prep, etc.)
- Anything else - sessions adapt to what you're working on

My approach:
Structured but relaxed. Rigorous with corrections, warm with delivery. My job is to give you the vocabulary, the confidence, and the reflexes to say what you actually want to say - in French that sounds like you.

I could read and write French pretty well but froze the second I had to speak. Elise fixed exactly that. She pitches everything just above where you’re at, so you’re always stretching, and she’s genuinely fun to talk to - music, food, whatever’s in the news. Feels like catching up with a French mate, not a tutor.
