About Brooke
I am a special education teacher for 12 years and have been working with students who have intellectual disabilities such as Autism, Asperger’s, and Down Syndrome. I work with my students in small groups or individually, and teach them skills related to reading, writing, and math. Some of the math skills that I teach in personal finance class are; discounts, sales tax, basic mathematical calculations.
By the end of the personal finance class my students master these concepts, and can apply them in a practical setting. Students state that they are now confident with shopping in their community because they can understand basic change, and can apply their knowledge of discounts and sales. In addition to my students’ success with finances, I help them excel in their course work they take to complete their certificate in independent living.

The practical experience that I have gained through completing my educational goals has helped me excel in this field. I currently have a level I special education credential through Fresno State, and a masters in Mild/Moderate Special Education from La Verne. I have had the opportunity to apply the teaching strategies I learned from my educational experience to the classroom.
I take a student-centered approach to learning. When I begin to work with each student I use a learning style inventory to determine his or her learning style. For example, if the student is a visual learner, I use illustrations and visual props to explain a concept. Next, I use differentiated instruction to reach the wide range of abilities. Another technique that I use frequently is peer grouping. During my small groups, I elicit each student’s working knowledge about the subject matter by posing a question about the topic. Students work together and use their skill set to answer the problem. In addition to peer groups, I use a strategy called Think Aloud. This helps students comprehend the information because they can hear each step of the concept that is being presented.
Another tutoring technique is the gradual release of responsibility technique. For example when I plan a tutoring session for the students I categorize them by levels: introduction, intermediate, and advanced. Next, I break the problems down into steps for students who need a methodical approach. Finally, I reduce the steps as the students progress onto the intermediate and advanced worksheets. When I use these teaching methodologies, the students have greater chance of reaching their academic goals.
In order to assure that a significant amount of students learn the lesson objective I make sure that I use accommodations and modifications in the classroom. When I teach, I often use these in the classroom: fill-in-the- blank questions instead of short -answer questions, extra time for writing to accommodate motor skill fatigue, and provide software such as Natural Reader.
Effective teachers bring the best out of their students when they create a productive working environment. These are attributes that are necessary to be outstanding tutor.
