About Melissa

Hello!

I am interested in applying for this tutor position because I have a passion for teaching both general ed and Special Education students. In my last position I taught five math classes a day, wrote IEPs and case managed twenty-four students. I enjoy helping those who have disabilities and have honed my skills in developing modifications and accommodations for my students.

My experience includes one year as a long term substitute position teaching English to middle school special education students. In my last position, I taught math in the RSP and SDC setting. The population I served had a wide array of disabilities ranging from emotional disturbances to learning disabilities to autism. I enjoy helping those who have disabilities and know how to motivate, accommodate and care for my students. I hold a mild/moderate special education credential and Masters degree from National University as well as a degree in history from CSUSM. I am familiar with the IEP, SST and 504 processes.

Lastly, I have private tutoring experience as well. I was a personal tutor all through college and into my career as a teacher as well. I think that one on one tutoring is the key to helping those with improving in areas of weakness. I tutored elementary and high school levels.

I am hoping to hear back from you and am confident that I would be a great ally for special education students.

Sincerely,

Melissa Derr, M. Ed.
Education Specialist

My name is Melissa Benton and I am 26 years old. My husband is a Naval Officer and we are currently stationed in Rhode Island. I hold a California teaching credential for ages K-12th grade and am interested in pursuing tutoring positions. I am interested in applying for this tutor position because I have a passion for teaching both general ed and Special Education students. In my last position in California I tought five math classes a day, wrote IEPs and case managed twenty-four students. I enjoyed helping those who have disabilities and have honed my skills in developing modifications and accommodations for my students based on their preferred learning styles. As well as having classroom teaching experience, I also have experience teaching in the virtual environment. I have taught math and English via skype for over a year and have enjoyed this platform as well. As to the levels I have taught: I have extensive teaching experience in elementary, middle and high school settings teaching math, reading, writing and social sciences. I hold a teaching credential in Special Education that allows me to teach all grade levels. As to my teaching philosophy it includes ensuring that the student's specific learning style is highlighted. I truly believe that if a student feels comfortable in their own natural way of learning that they achieve more and feel confident. Lastly, I strongly feel that if a student feels values and accepted (whatever their learning level is) they will be more likely to succeed and improve in there area of need. Please contact me if you think my qualifications match the needs of your child.
