About Raisa

I'm a recent graduate of Brooklyn Technical High School, one of New York City's specialized high schools, where I majored in Biological Sciences and maintained a 98.44 GPA. I earned a 4 on the AP Calculus AB exam and scored 95 on both of my Algebra Regents exams, so I bring both strong personal results and a genuine command of the material to every lesson.

For the past three years, I have volunteered as an SHSAT prep instructor at Delta Prep, a nonprofit organization serving underprivileged communities across New York City. In that role, I independently plan and teach a class of 14 middle school students, which has given me real experience managing a classroom, adapting explanations for different learning styles, and keeping students engaged and motivated over the long term. I have also tutored SAT prep through Schoolhouse, giving me additional experience working one-on-one with students at different skill levels.

I am now entering LIU Brooklyn's Honors College, where I plan to pursue a B.S. in Health Sciences and Psychology on my path toward becoming a physician assistant. I take tutoring seriously as both a responsibility and a skill I have worked to develop, and I am committed to showing up prepared, communicating clearly, and helping each student make measurable progress.

My approach as a tutor:

I believe math clicks best when students understand why a method works, not just how to execute it. Rather than jumping straight to formulas, I break problems down step by step, connect new concepts to ones a student already feels confident in, and check for understanding constantly instead of assuming a nod means it landed. If a technique doesn't work for a student, I switch approaches instead of repeating the same explanation louder.

A typical lesson:

I usually start with a quick warm-up to see what's fresh and what's shaky, then move into new material broken into small, digestible pieces with guided practice alongside me. We work through problems together before a student tries similar ones independently, and I leave time at the end for mixed review so concepts don't get forgotten between sessions. For test prep specifically, I build in timed practice once the fundamentals are solid, so students get comfortable with pacing and pressure, not just content.

What sets me apart:

I've spent three years independently running a self-taught SHSAT prep class of 14 middle schoolers through a nonprofit serving underprivileged NYC communities, so I've had to learn how to hold a group's attention, adjust on the fly, and explain the same concept five different ways until it lands for five different learners. I bring that same patience and flexibility to one-on-one tutoring. As a recent honors graduate of a specialized high school, I also understand exactly what these exams and courses demand, because I went through them myself not long ago.

Who this is for:

I tutor students from elementary through high school in math, with particular strength in algebra and SHSAT test prep. I'm comfortable working with students who are behind and need to rebuild confidence, as well as students aiming for competitive placement exams who want an edge.
