I stand out from other tutoring services because we focus on the course material as much as we focus on the student's ability to manage their time, how they organize their notes.

About Erik
(concealed information)
Early on I was diagnosed with ADHD, and to be honest, I wasn’t always the best student. I had difficulty focusing and staying on task and keeping organized. The more structure that was put on my time the more I was able to accomplish. So the reason I love working with students all sorts of learning issues because in a way I understand what it’s like to be in their position. Every student learns differently, and that's part of my job to fill in the gaps that the teacher is not providing. I know that typically the issues with ADD/ADHD kids isn't that they are not smart or not capable, they are just unorganized. By addressing these issues early hopefully, we can instill some coping habits.
In college pulling out my books to study was the hardest step of the process. I would always dread pulling out my books to study, but once I got going 15 minutes later I was content and even excited to be studying. So at the begging of every session, I ask the student to take out all their study materials. Then I let them have a chance to vent about the day or ask me anything none school-related. The goal is to add something positive before the ‘dreaded study session’. By pulling out their school books, they begin to prime their brain for the subject matter and the task at hand. I like to use this trick on my students because it has helped me get over my studying anxiety.

Do I think my style or methods are radically different from any other Tutor? No, I just know I have the supreme patience to handle ADHD students, I know many of the pitfalls and roadblocks and I can truly empathize with how they feel. My High School Geometry teacher Ms. Jones told my mother that she didn't think I was capable of handling the honors math courses. She was the worst, most unengaging teacher, she was so boring I couldn't for the life of me care about her or the class. She gave me a C and declined to recommend me into the honors program. If my mother didn't fight to get me into the Honors Math Program, this would have had real-world consequences for my college prospects. She knew I loved math. She knew Ms. Jones had no clue what she was doing as a high school teacher. I ended up getting A's in all my math classes and graduated from UNCA with a math degree. However, I consider myself lucky because I have been gifted with such amazing tutors, teachers, and professors throughout my career. The point I'm trying to make is we are the ones who decide what we are capable of, and no one else.
