About Zoe

Hi, I'm Ms. S! My passion is helping students succeed on their own journeys, in school and in life. Math just happens to be my specialty, and I love taking hard concepts and breaking them down until they finally make sense. I concentrated in math education in college, where I learned not only the math itself but also how students learn it best. I also work with high school students in teen outreach programs, and I spent 4 years working with children at a summer camp, so I know how to connect with students of all ages and keep them engaged. I'm patient, organized and reliable, and I come to every lesson prepared to work at each student's pace. My goal is for every student to leave our lessons more confident than when they arrived, and I look forward to helping you reach yours!

About the lesson

My method:
I don't just show you how to get the answer. I explain why it works. My lessons are hands-on: we use objects, drawings, graphs and quick activities so you can see and feel how a concept works before we move to the abstract steps. I also connect math to real life, like using percentages for shopping discounts, fractions in recipes, slope in ramps and roads, and budgeting with algebra. That way the math has a purpose and sticks. I break every concept into small, clear steps, and if one explanation doesn't click, I try another.

A typical lesson:
A quick check-in on what you're working on in class and what's confusing you
A hands-on introduction to the concept, with a real-world example to show why it matters
Guided practice, where we solve problems side by side
Independent practice while I watch and give feedback
A short recap and a few practice problems for next time
What sets me apart: I'm truly patient. I know math can feel frustrating, and I never rush you or make you feel bad for asking a question, even the same one twice. My training is in how people learn math, not only in the math itself, and 4 years at summer camp taught me how to keep kids engaged and make learning fun. I'm also a pianist, and I often use patterns and rhythm to make math feel less intimidating.

Who's it for?
elementary and middle school students, from basic math through algebra, geometry and pre-calculus. That includes homework help, test prep and filling gaps from earlier years. Adults who want to brush up on their skills are welcome too.
