About Rufus

I am a musician, composer and drummer currently studying composition at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama. Music has been a central part of my life for over 11 years, and throughout that time I have developed a passion for both performing and understanding how music works. Alongside my studies, I have extensive experience playing in ensembles, performing live and writing music for a variety of groups, from jazz ensembles and big bands to large orchestras. I achieved Grade 8 Drum Kit at distinction level and have received recognition for my compositional work, including the David Russell Compositional Prize for Young Composition.

My interest in teaching developed through my experience working in music education at Boundary Oak School, where I worked with pupils of different ages and abilities across music lessons, rehearsals and performances. I particularly enjoyed helping students discover their strengths, overcome challenges and develop confidence in their musical abilities.

I want to teach because I believe music should be an enjoyable and rewarding subject, regardless of a student's starting point. Having experienced the challenges of learning an instrument, developing compositional skills and studying music academically myself, I understand the importance of having someone who can explain concepts clearly, offer encouragement and help make difficult topics manageable.

As a tutor, I aim to combine my academic knowledge with practical experience, making lessons relevant, engaging and tailored to each individual. Whether I am helping a student understand harmony, improve their GCSE or A-Level Music analysis, develop an original composition or learn the drums, my goal is to help them build confidence, develop independence and enjoy the process of learning.

Ultimately, I want to share my enthusiasm for music and help students discover what they are capable of achieving, both in their studies and as musicians.

My lessons are tailored to each student's individual goals, ability and learning style, whether you're a complete beginner, preparing for exams or looking to develop your skills as a musician and composer.

I have experience working in music education at Boundary Oak School, where I worked with pupils across a range of ages, supporting music lessons, rehearsals, ensembles and performances. This gave me valuable experience helping students develop their musical understanding, build confidence and engage with music in a practical and enjoyable way. Alongside this, I have over 11 years of drumming experience and an extensive background in composition and arranging. I am currently studying at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, further developing my skills as a performer and composer.

I offer tuition in music composition, GCSE and A-Level Music, music theory and drumming. Having studied music myself, I have a strong understanding of the GCSE and A-Level Music specifications, including the demands of listening and analysis papers, set works, composition coursework and performance assessments. I can help students understand difficult musical concepts, strengthen their analytical skills and develop compositions that demonstrate their creativity and technical understanding.

In composition, I can help students develop musical ideas, understand harmony, create effective melodies, explore orchestration and write for different instruments and ensembles. As a drummer with Grade 8 Drum Kit at distinction level, I can also teach rhythm, technique, sight-reading and stylistic versatility.

My teaching approach is friendly, patient and practical. I believe students learn best when they understand not just what they are doing, but why it works. I explain complex musical concepts in an accessible way, using clear examples and practical exercises to help students apply what they learn. I encourage creativity and experimentation while ensuring students develop the technical knowledge and understanding needed to progress.

Every lesson is adapted to the individual, balancing strong musical foundations with the areas that interest each student most. Whether you want to improve your exam results, develop a composition portfolio, prepare for GCSE or A-Level assessments, learn the drums or become more confident in your musical abilities, I will work with you to help you achieve your goals.

Above all, I want lessons to be engaging, supportive and rewarding, helping every student develop their musical skills, creativity and confidence.
