About Alexander

Training & Accolades:
I started piano and percussion lessons almost 20 years ago. Been playing both with on-and-off lessons ever since. Earned several music and band awards and scholarship.

Performance Experience:
Performed in multiple ensembles, some audition-only, through high school and college, including:
~New England Music Festival Association (NEMFA) Band
~All-Eastern Honors Band
~Connecticut Regional and All-State Bands
~4 years Marching Band as Pit percussionist (Pit section leader and Drum Major senior year)
~Original music composition competition
~Multiple school concert bands, symphonic orchestras, musical orchestra pits, and percussion ensemble

Why Me?
I treat the lessons as a personal endeavor. It will become my goal to have the student gain the knowledge, then the understanding, then be able to apply that understanding. It is a personal achievement when a student reaches that "aha" moment, where their understanding is unlocked. It's the joy of teaching for me, and pairing that with my joy of percussion is a combination that will make me invested in the student's success.

About the lesson

DISCLAIMER: Drum set will NOT be part of these lessons.

Intended Audience:
I am willing to teach beginner or introductory lessons. We will cover the basics of a variety of concepts but will primarily focus on concert band percussion instruments from a beginner standpoint.

Communication and Teaching Media:
I only teach remotely right now.
~Webcam over Google Meet for scheduled appointments.
~Text communication over Gmail.
~Available evenings, Monday through Friday

Teaching Methods:
~Students are requested to possess or have access to at least one pair of their own drumsticks and mallets during the lesson, so they can follow along with the technique demonstrations.
~If they possess or have access to instruments, we will cater the lesson to what they have, if able.

Teaching Topics:
~Lessons will be guided demonstration of proper technique for playing various instruments, variations on some techniques, do's and do not's of playing, and general philosophy of percussion.
~Additional topics covered may include, at the student's discretion: percussion sheet music reading, general music notation and reading, interval training, basic music theory, resources for and reviews of additional sticks/mallets/equipment.

Typical Lesson:
A lesson is 1 hour. Exact structure subject to change:
Begins with a review of progress from previous lesson (if applicable). Continues on to main focus of that lesson, with opportunity for questions or additional topics throughout. Ends with a suggestion for continued practice for afterwards.
