About Maria

I’m an award-winning multidisciplinary artist, curator, art historian, and researcher based in London, with over fifteen years of experience across contemporary art, education, and curatorial practice. My work explores themes of identity, sexuality, vulnerability, and embodied experience through painting, installation, animation, and screen printing. Alongside my artistic practice, I am deeply passionate about mentoring and supporting emerging artists and students in developing their creative voice and academic direction. I hold an MA in Fine Art Painting from Camberwell College of Arts (UAL), where I received the Art Ambassador Award, as well as an MA in Fine Art from the Institute of Contemporary Art in Moscow and postgraduate training at the V. Surikov Moscow State Academic Art Institute. Since moving to the UK, I have continued to expand my professional practice and was endorsed with the UK Global Talent Visa in recognition of my artistic achievements. My work has been exhibited internationally, including presentations in London and Basel, with exhibitions and collaborations involving institutions and organisations such as South London Gallery, Saatchi Gallery, Victoria and Albert Museum, Quartz Collective, Rabbits’ Choice, Regroup Collective, Voskhod Gallery, and brands including Urban Outfitters. Recent projects include the immersive installation Fractured Self for the Tellus Triennial Residency and the collaborative exhibition I Always See Stars Above My Head in London. My work has also been shortlisted for the Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair and featured in Made in Bed magazine by Sotheby’s Institute of Art. Alongside my professional practice, I have extensive experience teaching and mentoring students at Foundation, BA, and MA levels. I support students from institutions including University of the Arts London, Royal College of Art, Goldsmiths, University of London, and University College London in portfolio development, academic writing, critical thinking, research methodologies, artist statements, and university applications. My teaching approach is supportive, intellectually engaging, and tailored to each student’s individual goals and creative identity. I believe that art education should encourage curiosity, experimentation, confidence, and independent thinking. Whether supporting beginners developing technical skills in painting and drawing or guiding advanced students through research-based practice and university preparation, I aim to help each student build a coherent and authentic creative practice.

My teaching method is highly personalised and centred around the individual student. I build my classes through dialogue, critical thinking, and creative exploration, encouraging students to reflect deeply on their work while developing confidence in their artistic voice. My approach combines practical skill-building with conceptual development, helping students create a coherent and professional artistic practice.

A strong focus of my mentoring is portfolio preparation and university applications for leading Fine Art programmes across the UK, USA, and Europe. I support students applying to institutions such as Royal College of Art, University of the Arts London, The Slade School of Fine Art, Goldsmiths, University of London, Central Saint Martins, Parsons School of Design, School of Visual Arts, Pratt Institute, and The Cooper Union, as well as Foundation, BA, and MA programmes internationally.

Over the last ten years, I have mentored students at beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels in painting, drawing, screen printing, digital art, research, and creative thinking. I guide students through every stage of portfolio development, including:
BA and MA Fine Art portfolio preparation
Foundation course applications
Artist statements and personal statements
Project proposals and research structure
Interview preparation and presentation skills
Dissertation and essay writing
GCSE, A-Level, and IB Visual Arts support
Process portfolios, comparative studies, and curatorial rationale

My teaching is grounded in research and tailored strategy. I help students organise their ideas, structure projects, meet deadlines, and develop long-term approaches to sustaining an artistic practice. Beyond technical instruction, I support students in building confidence, refining their conceptual direction, and understanding how to present their work professionally to universities, galleries, and wider audiences.

I currently organise painting and drawing workshops from my studio in West Brompton, London, working with both beginners and professional artists. Beginners benefit from strong foundational techniques in drawing, painting, and observation, while advanced students receive specialised conceptual guidance and portfolio-focused mentoring.

As an international artist working in the UK, I also deeply understand the challenges faced by students studying in English as a second language. I aim to create a supportive and open environment where students feel encouraged to experiment, express ideas freely, and strengthen both their creative and academic abilities.
