Learn Tabla with a Professional, Gharana-Trained Artist Hi! I'm Vignesh Kannan, a Tabla Sangeet Visharad with over 15 years of experience as both a performer and a teacher. I’ve had the privilege of learning under Pandit Mukund Marathe (son of the legendary Pandit Ram Marathe) in Mumbai and Pandit Gyan Singh in Delhi, absorbing the rhythmic heritage of Delhi and Farukhabad Gharanas. Over the years, I've performed and accompanied artists in classical concerts, bhajans, thumris, folk music, and fusion/jazz ensembles. About the lesson

My Teaching Approach

As a tabla percussionist with over 15 years of training and performance experience, I believe in nurturing not just technical skill, but also a deep musical understanding and appreciation for rhythm. My goal is to make tabla learning enjoyable, intuitive, and tailored to each student’s pace and aspirations—whether you’re aiming to accompany bhajans at home or perform on stage in classical or fusion settings.

Teaching Techniques and Methods

I follow a structured yet flexible approach grounded in the traditional guru-shishya parampara while integrating modern tools for effective learning. My methods include:

Step-by-step instruction on hand technique, posture, and clarity of bols. Slow-to-fast progression for kaidas, relas, tukdas, and other compositions. Use of clapping and vocal recitation (padhant) to internalize rhythm. Practice tracks and video reviews to aid independent learning. Introducing compositions from both Delhi and Farukhabad Gharanas with context and musicality. Emphasis on listening, improvisation, and accompaniment dynamics across genres
