About Igor-Alexandre

ABOUT MYSELF :

Hi, I’m Igor, a 48-year-old French International Grandmaster. I’ve beaten Magnus Carlsen in an official classical game, spent 15 years as the main coach of Teymur Radjabov (former World No. 4 and World Cup winner), and trained the 2022 U10 World Champion. I also captained the French national chess team from 2019 to 2022. My peak FIDE rating was 2596, and I reached No. 161 in the world.

In more than 25 years of teaching, I’ve worked with everyone from complete beginners to experienced club players and titled competitors. My students range from age 6 to 70+. You don’t need a rating to get started, and I enjoy teaching at every level.

For your child, I want lessons to be something they look forward to. To me, that matters most. We’ll build solid chess foundations and use those 64 squares to help their confidence grow, too. If they already compete, let’s work toward stronger results and a few more trophies along the way! If they’re excited about entering their first tournament, I can help them prepare.

For adults, has your online rating stopped moving? Do you keep losing games from winning positions, or spend hours studying openings without seeing much difference in your results? We’ll go through your games together, understand what’s holding you back, and focus on the things that will make the biggest difference to your play.

You can count on honest feedback and explanations suited to your level. Bring your questions, the moves you weren’t sure about, and even the games you’d rather forget. Those often give us the best starting point.

I live in Paris with my family and my two sons, aged eight and one. I currently teach mainly online via Zoom or Google Meet, in English or French. The in-person lessons I give at the moment are in Paris. I also visit New York from time to time, so meeting for a lesson may be possible during those trips.

Paris is usually six hours ahead of New York and nine ahead of Los Angeles. Let me know your time zone and preferred lesson times, and I’ll tell you which slots I can offer.

Feel free to get in touch and tell me a little about yourself or your child, and what you’d like to improve. Include your rating or (concealed information) username if you have one. I’ll reply personally with how I can help and my availability.

WHAT A LESSON WITH ME LOOKS LIKE

If you already play regularly, send me a few recent games before our first lesson so I can take a look. Your Chess.com or Lichess username works perfectly, too. Where helpful, we’ll go through those games together to understand what’s costing you points and decide what to work on first. If you’re a beginner, we’ll start with the basics and build from there.

For some players, it makes more sense to focus on a specific skill: calculation, endgames, understanding middlegame positions, or finding a plan when no obvious move stands out. Sometimes, we need to tackle a habit: rushing when you have time, doubting a good move, or letting one mistake spoil the rest of the game. Understanding the cause helps us find the right way to address it.

There’s no single training method that suits everyone. We might explore a theme through carefully chosen positions, learn through practice and analysis, or work on how you make decisions under pressure. The balance depends on what helps you most and which way of learning you enjoy. I’m flexible about how we work together.

I’ll ask you to explain your moves, and we’ll test your ideas together. My goal is for you to understand why good moves work and become better at finding them yourself.

A few examples of what we can work on:

- Your own games: identifying mistakes that keep coming back.
- An opening repertoire built around positions you understand, enjoy, and feel comfortable playing.
- Calculation and tactics: spotting opportunities and checking your ideas.
- Avoiding blunders and recognizing your opponent’s threats and plans.
- Planning, strategy, and turning good positions into wins.
- Endgames and practical techniques suited to your level.
- Time management, concentration, and handling pressure.
- Tournament preparation and reviewing your games afterward.

With children, I adapt the pace and activities to their age and attention span. Some enjoy solving puzzles; others learn more by playing and discussing their moves. I want them to make progress and look forward to next week’s lesson.

With adults, we’ll take your schedule into account as well. Whether you can practice every day or only on weekends, we’ll put your effort where it will help most.

Between lessons, you can message me when a position puzzles you. I also stay in touch before and during tournaments to help with preparation, offer feedback, or give some encouragement.

Not sure exactly what you need yet? Don’t worry, we’ll figure it out together!
