My lessons are geared towards students who want to improve their overall writing in the long term and don't want to rely on a tutor.
I like to start off my sessions with a self-assessment by the student on what they think they need to work on. Regardless of whether it's an essay or a report, I start off by reading their introduction, the first paragraph, and the conclusion. This is how I check for a cohesive paper.
Then, I ask the student about the paper--what they want to convey, their argument, the goal of the paper, etc. This helps me best understand the perspective of the student, as everyone has a different thought process that translates into how they communicate in writing.
I review the draft, section by section, with the student, asking questions for clarification, and advise on how to best communicate their ideas. When advising, I use explanations geared towards each student's method of thinking. It is important to me that students fully understand the lesson.
I understand that being a student is stressful, and am trained in helping students navigate high-stress situations by calmly coaching them in re-evaluating their concerns. As a result of my students' success, I was a frequently requested tutor at the University Writing Centre.
I'm a graduate from the University of British Columbia and currently work in the marketing industry as a copywriter. I have previously worked at the University of British Columbia as a writing consultant for two years, and specialize in academic writing.
I am knowledgeable in the fields of Political Science, Anthropology, Sociology, Economics, and History. However, as a consultant, I have tutored students through papers in the realms of Engineering, Computer Science, Medicine, Business, Psychology, Biology, and Chemistry. Although creative writing is not my formal specialty, I am comfortable with it due to my professional and personal experience. My students have included undergraduates, secondary school students, Master's, and Ph.D. candidates.
I speak several languages and have lived in several countries. As a result, I'm well suited tutoring those who don't use English as their primary language and have been successful in guiding these students to communicate more effectively in their writing.

Perfect! Natalie is Awesome !!
Perfect! I've only been having essay writing classes with Natalie for around 2 months but I've already seen incredible improvement in my writing and confidence in it. Natalie is very dedicated to helping her students improve and grow as a writer, which is hard to find. If it's not obvious enough yet, I highly recommend Natalie, she's awesome.
Perfect! Natalie is giving me a significant amount of help for my thesis! I had multiple sessions with her, and I found that each session is so productive! As an international graduate student, I often struggle with expressing my idea in English. She is fast, but also cautious! As an upper-intermediate English speaker, I definitely recommend her to anyone struggling with their essays/thesis/surveys/anything really!
Yelim is very receptive to feedback and asks good questions that help her own understanding. She's a pleasure to work with!
Natalie is both sharp and kind when giving her clients feedback about their writing. You will immediately see that she will review your punctuation and flow but goes beyond those elements. Natalie’s approach helps equip her students with the thinking and the tools that will improve their writing even after their sessions together. Her way of challenging you with straightforward, but gentle-enough nudges is where you’ll see the change in your writing, and I cannot recommend her enough.
Through my work with Natalie, I’ve gotten into the habit of asking myself better questions on what I want to convey and how I’d like to do so, both of which have helped immensely. And, while I’ve seen the improvement, I still come back to Natalie for all sorts of texts that are important to me because I know her input is one I can always trust.
I've known Natalie for many years and she is an AMAZING tutor! I was lucky enough to meet Natalie in my first year of university when I needed help with my writing in many different subject areas. Natalie was so friendly and open, and gave me incredible feedback. No matter the subject, she was able to help me critically analyze the material and what I wanted to say about it. She worked with me and guided me to write papers that I felt very confident in submitting for university. I continually came back to her for writing advice, and I wouldn't see anyone else! Natalie is an incredible person to work with and the best writing tutor I have had. She made a big impact on my writing for the first few years of my time in university, which has had a lasting impact and allowed me to develop writing techniques that I still use to this day. It is because of her support that I gained a lot of confidence in my own writing and eventually felt I could write a convincing paper on my own. I would highly recommend Natalie for anyone who is looking for assistance writing anything academic or non-academic - she has a way of making your ideas come to life!
Natalie is a qualified, experienced, and dedicated writing consultant. I received her help when I was at university a few years ago and impressed by her teaching skills. If you are looking for someone who can provide clear explanations, examples, and quality feedback, you should book Natalie's class! Did I mention that she is very friendly, professional, and has a refined sense of humour? :)
