About Gerald

I grew up attending public schools, and math did not always come easily to me. I know firsthand what it feels like to sit in a math class, struggle with a concept, and wish someone would explain it in a way that finally made sense.

As a college athlete, I learned the value of discipline, perseverance, preparation, and having a great coach in your corner. Those experiences eventually helped shape my decision to become a math teacher. I wanted to be the kind of teacher I felt I needed when I was a student struggling with math: patient, encouraging, understanding, and willing to find a different way to explain something when the first approach didn't work.

Today, I bring that same philosophy to my tutoring. I believe struggling with math does not mean a student cannot succeed in math. Sometimes students simply need the right explanation, the right support, and someone who believes that understanding can be built one step at a time.

My goal is to help students strengthen their math skills while also developing confidence, perseverance, and independence. I want my students to leave our sessions thinking, "I can do this."

About the lesson

My tutoring approach is personalized, structured, and designed to build both mathematical understanding and confidence. I work with grade-school students of all ages and ability levels, meeting each learner within their Zone of Proximal Development and providing the right balance of challenge and support to help them grow toward independence.

I use planned scaffolding to break complex concepts into manageable steps, gradually removing support as students develop understanding and mastery. Through differentiation, I adjust explanations, examples, visuals, questioning, pacing, and practice to match each student’s individual strengths and learning needs.

I also incorporate culturally sustaining pedagogy, valuing students’ experiences, identities, backgrounds, and ways of thinking while creating meaningful connections to mathematics.

My goal goes beyond completing assignments or preparing for the next test. I want students to understand why math works, develop strong problem-solving strategies, build confidence, and become independent learners who are prepared for continued academic success.
