About Maria

Hello! It is lovely to meet you :)

My academic background:
I recently graduated from the University of British Columbia with an 86% average in my classes. I majored in psychology and minored in philosophy, but maintained an average of 90% and above throughout my university and high school English and literature classes. My passion for writing has also earned me multiple scholarships and awards throughout my academic life. Having only attended schools in the B.C. education system, I am very familiar with the expectations of English and writing classes in this system.

My passion for writing:
In university, I entered several writing contests and eventually published a poetry book. In my grade 12 year, I ran a writing club at my school to give students feedback on assignments, share writing resources with them, and encourage them to have fun through creative writing activities. I enjoy helping my friends with their English skills by editing their writing, sharing advice with them, and going over reading comprehension questions prior to essays or tests.

My personality:
In my spare time, I enjoy writing poetry and reading books of varied genres, as well as singing in my choir, traveling, spending time with friends, and baking. Others would describe me as outgoing, calm, and patient.

About the lesson

I believe that listening and creativity are fundamental aspects of the teaching experience; as such, my teaching methodology involves listening to students and allowing them to take creative liberties as much as it does educating them.

A typical class would begin with me getting to know the student and developing a safe space where the student can feel comfortable asking questions. Next, I would work with the student on the skill(s) they want to improve by explaining the core concepts, providing ways for them to practice the skill (e.g., worksheets, games, age-appropriate texts to read), and allowing them to explore the skill in their own ways (e.g., writing short stories, seeking out enriching material to read, sharing what they learn with a family member or friend). Throughout and at the end of the class, I would make sure to listen to the student’s thoughts on the material and encourage them to ask questions about concepts they do not understand so they can approach their learning in a more self-directed way.

I am passionate about creative expression, and would love to explore English skills in creative ways with interested students (e.g., writing poetry, making metaphors, playing with sounds) to make classes both an educational and fun time.

My classes are most suitable for pre-teens and teenagers in grades 7-11.
