About Derek
As a first-year undergraduate student at Northwestern University pursuing a degree in Chemical Engineering, I am deeply passionate about sharing my love for science and mathematics with my peers. Although relatively early in my academic journey, I possess a strong foundation in these subjects and am excited to leverage my knowledge to assist fellow students.
I am dedicated to providing guidance and support to my peers in understanding complex concepts in chemistry, physics, and mathematics. My approach emphasizes clarity, patience, and adapting teaching methods to suit diverse learning styles. I believe in fostering an environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and engaging deeply with the material.
While I continue to expand my own academic horizons, I am eager to help others navigate challenging coursework and reinforce fundamental principles. I am committed to contributing to the academic success and confidence of my fellow students.

I understand how difficult it can be to get students to study extra as my parents struggled to get me to put in extra effort into academics outside of school. I think this attitude is especially prevalent among middle and high school students and my lesson plans include several breaks for the student to rest and reset their mind. I also take the time to get to know my students because I believe developing a personal connection is important to incentivize the student to want to learn. A normal lesson will consist of a short period of teaching content, followed by examples to ensure engagement, and then a period at the end to review.
