About Rory
I'm a normal kid from the Suffolk countryside who went to a good state school (King Edward VI, Bury St Edmunds) and had a few brilliant teachers. I was on the school's 'gifted and talented' program, being prepared for Russell-Group study from a young age, and I was one of only about three students in my year to score full 100% marks across all our AS-Level Politics exams.
Then I got to university and struggled. My old ways stopped working and I had to build a whole new approach. At school I could lean on a few good teachers; at university I needed a process. It was uncomfortable and full of hard lessons, but the process I built took me from barely passing my first year to upper-first work (marks of 85% and above) by my final year.
I studied at the University of York from 2017 to 2021, graduating with a BA in Philosophy (with honors). I received the 'York Award' and was encouraged to stay on and specialize with the Philosophy department, though life had other plans!

My approach is fun, light-hearted and a bit unconventional. From day one I'll have you doing the thinking and articulating your ideas clearly. We'll each read something before the session, then work out together what the philosopher is actually trying to say, and start uncovering the philosopher in you too.
The interesting part is finding your own reading of a text, then learning to demonstrate that understanding to the examiner through your writing, which we'll build alongside it. To do that you need to really grasp what the philosopher is getting at. If that feels vague right now, don't worry, it clicks after a few sessions.
These are powerful skills and they take time to develop. Working together, I'll walk you through the exact process I built, the one that turned my own writing around at university.
I adapt every session to your goals, whether you're sitting A-level exams in the summer or developing your work for a philosophy degree. GCSE students who want to get ahead are welcome too.
