About Lawrence
Greetings, fellow Sydneysiders. This is Lawrence from Hong Kong, a current Accounting & Political Economy major in USYD. Born and raised in Hong Kong, had my gap year in London and just about a few other countries, and now live in Sydney. I take pride in being well-traveled and cultured. Started learning at 7 and started teaching at 16, as I already completed my ATCL - a performance diploma in Piano when I was 15 with a score ***5 Marks Above Distinction***. My love resides in classical music, specifically Rachmaninoff, Saint-Saens, Bach, Hans Zimmer (& contemporary). My favorite living pianist is Yuja Wang. Have a British accent but not British, and I am a native speaker of ENG/CAN/MAN. These options make my class a 2-in-1 package as you see fit. Side note, I am quite the man of his vocabulary and pedantic expression if I do say so myself, hence I often dabble in teaching writing as well from time to time. For parents, I am experienced with students of all ages, who are stubborn, excellent, competitive, insecure, shy, or distracted. They come in all sorts and I have collected a decent amount of experience to make learning possible for them. I do oscillate between Tiger and Elephant teaching style accordingly to make things work. I aspire to achieve the perfect balance between competence and satisfaction in my students.

Hi, I am Erica, 16 years old and playing at grade 8. Despite his humour and friendly demeanour he is a deeply emotional and artistic tutor! He was able to recreate feelings that I have not known before had he not taken the time to go through historical contexts and real life examples with me just to explain to me how to 'feel' certain composers and interpret notes with imagination. He showed there is so so so much more than just tapping on the keyboard. With the right understanding and imagination the piano can sound different. The proudest moments we had was my journey during Trinity grade 8 where we did Bach, Chopin, and Debussy. It was challenging with many technical trainings but it was also inspiring and encouraging to see how much I have learned.
Lawrence talks a lot, and he shares a lot, I think apart from musical expressions, he also brings such a positive attitude and he is definitely a great advise giver. He is just easy to work with, and he is so patient with me even when I had my moments of low productivity. My school is also demanding too, and he was kind enough to help with my academics too. He is very all rounded, he reads a lot and he seems to know everything and can respond quickly to most of my questions in life or music. Honestly he is the best! I hope everything is well in Sydney for you!My name is Yona, Lawrence really reignited Tonya's interest in piano after stoping learning for a year and a half. She refused to practice and was just not reacting to music in general, but Lawrence is good at creating sense of achievement in a loving environment while pushing her limit with every class. He was strict yet loved by Yona. I honestly recommend him because Lawrence is so artistic and expressive and very patient and easy going.
Hello from Hong Kong! Lawrence had been teaching my two girls Giselle and Gabby for 2 years, such a shame he left HK because he really is good with children. My girls like to throw fits when things don't go their way and get distracted all the time with all the gadgets these days. But somehow he can centre them toward learnings and made really good progress, especially when compared with the other tutors I had before. My girls reached grade 5 already in just 2 years even though they didn't practice a lot.
