About Doug
I have been playing piano and keyboards for decades and began performing professionally at the age of 16. My musical background combines formal training, extensive performing experience, and years of teaching students of all ages and skill levels.
While attending Texas Christian University (TCU), I served as the lead jazz pianist with the university's jazz ensemble, developing a strong foundation in jazz performance, improvisation, harmony, and music theory.
Throughout my career, I have taught piano privately and performed in a wide variety of settings, including restaurants, private events, concerts, and live music venues. My experience spans many musical styles, including jazz, pop, rock, blues, Broadway, and contemporary music. I taught jazz and improvisation to the pianist, Brian Haas, leader of Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey!
Today, I continue to perform actively as the leader of a jazz combo and as keyboardist of the alternative rock band, The Hole Punchers.
As a teacher, I believe students learn best when lessons are both educational and enjoyable. I combine traditional piano instruction, music reading, theory, technique, chord charts, lead sheets, and improvisation with music that students genuinely enjoy. Whether your goal is to play popular songs, jazz standards, rock, country or write and perform your own music, I tailor lessons to your interests while helping you develop strong musicianship and confidence at the keyboard.

I offer customized piano and keyboard lessons that combine traditional music reading and theory with practical skills such as chord charts, lead sheets, improvisation, and playing by ear. Lessons are engaging, educational, and tailored to each student's musical interests, whether that's standards, pop, rock, jazz, Broadway, or other music of your taste. My goal is to help students become confident, well-rounded musicians while enjoying the music they love.

Doug is a great teacher! I'm a classically trained pianist and couldn't break out of that. I always had a difficult time play jazz from chord charts or even comping for simple pop songs. Doug was able to teach me the fundamentals for playing these styles and now when I sit down at the piano I really feel like I'm playing it instead of just hammering through memorized sheet music.
