About Fred
I'm Fred, and singing has been part of my life for as long as I've had a voice to do it with. I find it the most personal of all the ways to make music, for a simple reason: the instrument isn't something you hold or sit at — it's you. You carry it everywhere you go. You've been using it since before you could speak. And no two voices on earth are quite alike; yours has a color and a character that genuinely belongs to no one else. I never get tired of that idea, and a lot of how I teach grows out of it.
I've come to think of music not as a skill you conquer and then set aside, but as a companion you keep for the whole of your life — and that feels even truer of singing, since you can't put it down or leave it in a case. It's always with you. I'm still learning my own voice, too, even now; still discovering things it can do that surprise me. If anything, that's the feeling I'd most love to pass on — that this is a slow, unfolding pleasure you get to enjoy at your own pace, not a test you're scrambling to pass.
So I teach the way I'd have wanted to be taught: patiently, gently, and without ever making anyone feel self-conscious — which matters more with singing than almost anywhere else, because the voice feels so personal that using it in front of someone can leave you feeling exposed. I've worked with plenty of people convinced they simply "can't sing," and that belief almost never holds up once the fear and tension are eased away. The ones who give up usually aren't short on ability; they were just made to feel embarrassed, or pushed too hard, too soon. I'd rather make very sure none of that happens to you.
Whatever's brought you here — a lifelong wish to sing, a love of certain songs, or just quiet curiosity about what your voice can do — I'd be glad to help you find it, in your own time.

I like to begin by getting to know you a little, because the right lessons for one person look nothing like the right lessons for another. What are you hoping to get out of this? What kind of music moves you? Are you here to sing softly for your own pleasure, or chasing something more ambitious? There are no wrong answers — I just want to understand where you're headed, so the path we take leads somewhere you genuinely want to go.
From there we build gently, beginning with ease and breath. So much of what frustrates singers — the straining, the cracking, the running out of air halfway through a line — comes down to tension and the way we're breathing, so that's where we'll put the early, unhurried work. The aim is a voice that feels free and comfortable rather than forced, because a relaxed voice is a voice that can actually do what you ask of it.
Once that's taking root, the work becomes much more about you. We'll explore how to take a song and make it your own — the phrasing, the feeling, the way you tell its story — and we'll grow your range and stamina steadily, always in service of expression rather than as ends in themselves. I'll be honest with you about what needs work, but always kindly, and always with a clear, doable next step rather than a vague nudge to practice more. Real progress with the voice comes from small, regular, encouraging steps that quietly add up, not from heroic effort in big bursts.
Most of all, I want this to feel safe and enjoyable, and with singing I think that's especially important. Because the voice is so personal, a relaxed, no-judgment space isn't a luxury — it's the very thing that lets you open up and actually sing. So we'll keep the mood easy, celebrate the wins however small, and move at a pace that lets you savor each one. Wherever you're starting, and however far you decide to take it, I'd love to help you build a relationship with your own voice that lasts a lifetime.
