Based on my writing experience, I think the most important thing for young writers is to know what and why they write. Everyone has their unique perspectives and different reasons for being a writer. But what I struggled with most was the aloneness nature of this job. It doesn’t mean you feel lonely; on the contrary, workshops with other writers can make you feel companionship. The real lonely thing is sometimes you find no one can understand you because you don’t write it well or they’re not sure what you’re trying to say. And you have to justify your writing and sometimes be brave to embrace some hard topics like politics.
As a creative writing teacher, I believe my first duty is to teach them how to be aware of what they’re writing and how it may influence others. No matter what you write, it’s essential to write with good intentions. Speaks of crafts, as a rapidly changing industry, the way the audience perceives the story is very different from what we knew 10 or 20 years ago. I love alternative narratives and innovative structures, but I think only when you fully understand rules can you subvert them by purpose. In other words, I will focus on both traditional narrative crafts and also introduce something Avant-Garde.
