About Ivan

Widely recognized for his sharp analytical voice and deep understanding of cinematic language, Ivan Ožegović approaches film criticism as a synthesis of practice and insight. As the Head of Programme at Maison du Cinéma in Cannes, he operates at the intersection of global film culture—engaging directly with the work of leading directors, writers, and emerging talents, while shaping a platform that fosters critical and creative dialogue.

A trained actor and graduate of the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Zagreb, Ožegović brings a rare, inside perspective to his critical work. Having participated in over one hundred casting processes alongside professional casting directors, he possesses a nuanced understanding of performance, authorship, and the often-invisible dynamics that shape what ultimately appears on screen.

His collaborations with internationally renowned theatre and film directors further inform his critical lens, allowing him to approach film not only as a spectator, but as a practitioner—attentive to structure, rhythm, and the layered construction of meaning. Alongside his work in criticism, he has completed numerous screenwriting programs, developing a distinctive sensitivity to narrative architecture and character development. His own texts have been realized both in theatre and on film, reinforcing the dual perspective that defines his voice.

As a film critic, Ožegović is known for combining intellectual precision with an intuitive grasp of storytelling—writing that does not merely evaluate, but interprets, contextualizes, and reveals. His work reflects a core belief: that cinema is not only to be judged, but understood from within.

My approach to teaching is strongly shaped by my experience in film criticism and script evaluation. Having spent years analyzing films and reading a wide range of scripts, I’ve developed a sharp sensitivity to what truly works—and, more importantly, what doesn’t. This perspective allows me to recognize structural weaknesses, unclear character motivations, and inconsistencies in storytelling at a very early stage.

What sets my work apart is the combination of critical distance and practical understanding. As a trained actor, I approach characters from the inside, focusing on their emotional arcs, behavior, and internal logic. At the same time, as someone who constantly evaluates material, I maintain an external, analytical perspective—similar to that of a dramaturg, selector, or decision-maker in funding bodies and festivals.

This dual position enables me to guide writers not only in improving their scripts, but in understanding how their work will be perceived in a professional context. I focus on clarity, precision, and intention—cutting through unnecessary elements and strengthening what truly carries the story.

I am known for being direct and demanding in this process. The early stages of development require honesty and rigor, because that is where most long-term problems originate. By addressing them immediately, we avoid costly revisions later—especially when projects enter competitive environments such as open calls, labs, or funding applications.

Ultimately, the goal is to develop material that can withstand critical scrutiny—work that is not only engaging, but structurally sound, emotionally grounded, and clearly articulated.
