About Jon

I am a PhD-qualified tutor in Politics and International Relations, with postgraduate degrees in Strategic Studies and International Relations and East Asia. My academic background combines political analysis, international affairs, security studies and the study of contemporary international relations.

I completed my PhD at the University of Sheffield, researching the question of whether China can become a naval superpower. My research has involved analysing complex political and strategic questions, evaluating competing explanations, working with academic literature and developing evidence-based arguments.

Alongside my academic experience, I have worked in international business development and taught English-language learners. These experiences have strengthened my ability to explain difficult concepts clearly, adapt to different audiences and help students develop the confidence to communicate their ideas effectively.

I welcome students who want to deepen their understanding of politics and international affairs, prepare for university assessments, improve their analytical writing or develop stronger independent research skills. I aim to help students understand not only what to think about a subject, but how to approach it critically and construct a convincing argument of their own.

About the lesson

China and East Asian international relations: China's international role, regional security and the strategic implications of its rise.

Academic reading and research: Finding your way through scholarly literature, identifying central arguments and evaluating evidence.

Essay planning and argumentation: Developing a clear thesis, organising an argument, supporting claims with evidence and addressing counterarguments.

Research methods and critical thinking: Formulating research questions, comparing explanations and developing a systematic approach to analysis.

Academic presentations: Structuring presentations, explaining complex ideas and responding confidently to questions.

My teaching approach is structured, analytical and adapted to your needs. I encourage students to ask questions, challenge assumptions and develop their own interpretations rather than simply memorising material.

Where appropriate, we can work through readings, essay plans, practice questions or examples from your course. I can also help you identify weaknesses in your reasoning and improve the clarity and structure of your written work.

My aim is to help you become a more independent and confident student who can understand complex material, construct well-supported arguments and approach academic assignments systematically.
