About Jonathan

I have over 24 years teaching experience (EAP = English for Academic Purposes and EFL = English as a Foreign Language) and have taught students from over 100 countries, working in Japan, China and England. The ages have ranged from 6 to over 70. My students achieve great results and make significant progress from whatever level they start at. I have helped 100s of students secure their university place by ensuring that they achieve 6.5 or above at IELTS, with at least 6.5 in each skill. I specialise in academic English for secondary school and university. Business English courses are for all ages. Academic English - IELTS and the Cambridge English language exams (KET, PET, FCE and CAE). Intensive and long-term courses. Business English – Cambridge BEC (Business English Certificate - Preliminary, Vantage and Higher) with companies including Petronas, Ericsson and Corning International. Teacher trainer – Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) for A-level and GCSE curriculum staff; to make the language of their subjects more accessible to international students. Study Skills – Proofreading, Note-taking, Drafting and Editing.

About the lesson

Creating my own English company has enabled me to not only return to the 'classroom' but also move things forward by working with the amazing options which technology now provides us. Every student is different and my teaching reflects that. After an initial assessment, I work with the student to identify their key needs and set targets so that we both know what we are working towards and how we know we are succeeding. I understand the difficulties that students have learning English and the problems created by often having to learn it quickly to pass an exam, or to better cope with other curriculum subjects taught in English. It can feel overwhelming. I believe in interactive and relaxed classes and make Skype classes feel as natural as if they were face to face. For this, I use a variety of software to allow me to present lessons and mark and edit work with the student in real time.

Perfect! It has been a pleasure to have Jonathan as a tutor. One can notice immediately his ability to communicate and make the student feel at ease. Virginia was a delight to teach. She is a natural linguist who uses language to an impressively high level. Her range of expression, use of vocabulary and accuracy of grammar is of the highest standard. The most impressive aspect of her language is her understanding of nuance, idioms and natural expression.
She can move between general conversation to the most challenging aspects of academic work with ease.
Virginia is creative and ambitious in her use of language and has made significant progress, even in a short time.
