About Yifan

I’m a Chinese language educator, writer, singer, and independent creative currently based in Guangzhou.

I have taught Chinese learners from different cultural backgrounds in China, South Korea, the UK, and the US. I hold a Master’s degree in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages from Wuhan University, and later completed the TCSOL Certificate Program at Teachers College, Columbia University. In New York, I also taught and supported Chinese programs at China Institute.

Outside the classroom, I write essays on several platforms, make music, perform, and work on creative projects. I’m especially interested in people, relationships, cities, culture, memory, and the small everyday experiences that often lead to bigger questions.

Now based in Guangzhou, I’m also developing culture-based Chinese learning experiences that connect language with real places, local culture, everyday encounters, and creative activities.

I believe that advanced language learning is not simply about knowing more vocabulary or making fewer mistakes.

At some point, the real challenge becomes:

Can you still be fully yourself in another language?

Can you tell a complicated story?
Explain why you changed your mind?
Disagree without sounding harsher than you intended?
Talk about love, money, family, humor, death, memory, or uncertainty — and still feel like yourself?

That is the kind of Chinese I’m interested in teaching.

I currently focus on advanced Chinese learners who already have a solid foundation and want to move beyond textbook Chinese.

If you can manage everyday conversations but sometimes feel that your Chinese becomes “smaller” when the topic gets more complicated, these lessons are designed for you.

My classes are built around original writing, real-life stories, authentic materials, and open-ended conversation.

In many lessons, you will first read a short essay or story written by me. It may begin with something very ordinary — a conversation, a family interaction, an old object, a misunderstanding, a social observation — and gradually open into a larger question.

Then we discuss it together.

You are encouraged to question the text, disagree with me, compare perspectives across cultures, and find the Chinese language you need to express what you genuinely think.

I’m currently developing an original advanced discussion series around twelve themes:

Time · Numbers & Money · Public and Private Boundaries · Friendship · Family Relationships · Nostalgia and the Present · Greetings · Death · Love · Humor and Offence · The Known and the Unknown World· Necessary Things

These themes are intentionally broad. As the course continues to develop, each one will grow into a more specific question, story, or dilemma.

So rather than following a fixed textbook syllabus, the course develops through writing, real experiences, and conversation.

During class, I will help you work on:

expressing nuanced opinions;
telling stories with more natural rhythm and detail;
explaining uncertainty, contradiction, emotion, and changing perspectives;
understanding culturally specific ways of speaking and thinking;
noticing useful vocabulary, sentence patterns, tone, and discourse strategies in context;
sounding more natural without losing your own personality.

My teaching is discussion-oriented and task-based, so grammar and vocabulary usually emerge from what you are genuinely trying to communicate rather than from isolated exercises.

I’m especially interested in working with learners who are curious about Chinese culture and society, enjoy meaningful conversation, and want Chinese to become a language in which they can think, reflect, create, joke, disagree, and connect with other people.

The goal is not simply to make your Chinese more advanced.

It is to help you build a fuller voice in Chinese.
