About Erika Anahi

I am a QFB by training and I possess a Doctoral degree in Biomedical Sciences, awarded by the University of Veracruz in Xalapa, Mexico. My doctoral thesis centered on the study of epigenetic mechanisms that regulate the expression of calcium ATPases in breast cancer cell lines, in order to identify the possible changes that occur in the acquisition of the tumor phenotype. Acetylation and methylation changes, as well as histone modifications induced by DNA-methyltransferases and histone deacetylase inhibitors were assessed in human breast cancer cell lines using qRT-PCR and chromatin immunoprecipation (Contreras-Leal et al., 2016). Due to personal issues and maternity, however, I had to move away from academic research from 2013 to 2019, and postpone the defense of my doctoral thesis. During this period, I worked in two biotechnology companies dedicated to applications of genomics, microbiology and molecular biology technologies to the food and health care industries. My tasks in these companies were varied and mostly involved quality control assurance (ISO standards) in the areas of Genetics, Microbiology and Research & Development, as well as optimization and validation of molecular diagnostics assays.
Even when I enjoyed working in industry, and truly value the gained knowledge and experience, I never lost sight of my passion for research. In 2019, I was happy to finally find the opportunity to obtain my doctoral degree and pursue a postdoctoral stay. For the past year (2019-2020), I have been training as a postdoctoral fellow at the Center for Research and Assistance in Technology and Design of the State of Jalisco, C. A. (CIATEJ), in Yucatan, Mexico. Here, I participated in a study focusing on the morphological, biochemical and molecular characterization of a novel bacterial strain and its antifungal properties for agricultural applications (Evangelista-Martínez et al., 2020). Besides applying my knowledge and experience in molecular biology, this project gave me the opportunity to expand my skills in microbiology, biochemistry and microscopy, but my stronger reseach interest reside in the moleculars mechanims.

About the lesson

I like to teach based on project development, under an analytical and critical approach. We will approach any job, project and / or class from the analysis of what motivates me to achieve it, and what strategies do I have to do it? My opinion is that if we are not motivated and at peace, with the subject (s) that we have in between, we resist learning.
