About Boris

I am a tutor in Mathematics for High School and College. Currently I am working in Huntington Learning Center (HLC) in Baldwin, NY. My students come to HLC to improve their knowledge and skills to get better scores in Math school program and SAT. My basic responsibility is to bring to my students the fundamental knowledge of School Mathematics and to prepare them for the SAT test I graduated from State University of Uzbekistan in 1979 and have a Master in Applied Mathematics and Computer Science. Besides my 30 years’ experience in IT, I worked as a tutor in Math, Calculus, and Computer Science in college. I would like to transfer all my background to the young generation. Based on this information, what story can I tell teenage students to attract them to provoke an interest to study Math.

About the lesson

My example for a first lesson on Complex Numbers, for 11th grade, Algebra II. The lesson assumes no prior knowledge of complex numbers but builds on students' understanding of real numbers and solving quadratic equations. Lesson Plan: Introduction to Complex Numbers Lesson Objectives 1. Understand what a complex number is and its basic form a+b*i 2. Learn the concept of the imaginary unit (i) and its property that i^2=-1 3. Recognize the need for complex numbers to solve equations with no real solutions. 1. Engage with Real-World Examples o Start with a relatable question: “Can we find the square root of a negative number? What happens when we solve X^2+1= 0  Explain that such equations have solutions outside of real numbers, leading to the concept of complex numbers. 2. Direct Instruction with Visuals a+b*i, where a (real part) and b (imaginary part) are real numbers, and 𝑖 = Sqrt(-1) What Sets You Apart as a Tutor Clarity in Explanation: Breaking down complex concepts into manageable steps with visual aids. Engagement: Using real-world analogies and interactive questions to spark curiosity. Customization: Adapting the lesson to student needs—providing additional challenges for advanced learners or extra practice for struggling students. Interactive Techniques: Incorporating activities like group plotting exercises or quick quizzes to reinforce learning. Who These Lessons Are For Level: High school (11th grade, Algebra II).
