I work best explaining tge basic concept first of the topic. Using simple examples. Do more examples with the student and then letting the student ask questions before we move to more complicated examples. Lastly we end off with an exercise which we later check the results. If student did well we touch up on the small mistakes. If they did poorly i explain each question on exercise before we try another.
