About Sophia
My Work:
I’m a New York-based costume designer for the stage and screen, with over 8 years of professional experience. I’ve worked on a variety of projects within the entertainment industry, including Broadway, film & television, and commercials.
My Training:
I received my MFA in Design from the Yale School of Drama and my BFA from VCU School of the Arts. I’ve been an art student since I was very young, and I still consider myself to be a student today — constantly learning and inspired by new mediums and techniques.
My Teaching Style:
I value individuality above all else and will work to meet students where they are. Lessons will be customized to each student’s needs. The goal is not to “correct” your artistic instincts, but rather to hone in and develop a method and visual language that feels uniquely natural to you.

Three Courses Offered:
SKETCHING & LIFE DRAWING
Focus on observational drawing techniques and develop a sketching style that works best for you.
COSTUME & CHARACTER ILLUSTRATION
Learn to better communicate your ideas through effective and expressive illustrations. Drawing should be a helpful tool, not a hindrance. Learn how to achieve different textures using watercolor and gouache (and Procreate, for those looking to learn digital illustration). We'll also touch on color theory, page composition, and tips and tricks to make your work stand out.
*This class is best suited for those who already have a basic understanding of life drawing.
DESIGN PORTFOLIO GUIDANCE
A class designed specifically for those looking to build a design portfolio for college or graduate school admission. We'll review your work together and then polish and finesse as needed to best present your voice as a designer.
