About Deborah

Hello! I’m Debbie, a fully qualified English language teacher (English BA Hons, Postgraduate Certificate in Education, Qualified Teacher Status, Teaching English as a Foreign Language Certificate) with 17 years of UK and international teaching experience, as well as online.

I specialise in helping intermediate-level learners aged 12+ take the next step towards greater fluency, confidence and more natural English. Whether you're a teenager looking for enjoyable, engaging lessons or an adult who wants to communicate more confidently and naturally, I can create lessons around your goals.

For my teenage learners, lessons are never just about working through a textbook. We explore interesting, relevant topics such as FOMO, annoying habits, AI, technology, success and modern life, while building the language needed to express opinions and communicate with confidence.

I also work with adult learners who want to improve their spoken English, sound more natural, build confidence or develop the language they need for everyday life and work.

So, what will we work on?

First, we'll make sure the foundations of your English are strong. We'll revisit and strengthen key areas such as:

- Tenses
- Modal verbs
- Conditionals
- Conjunctions and linking language
- Sentence structure

These are the building blocks that help your English flow smoothly and confidently. I teach grammar in manageable, bite-sized chunks because I understand how overwhelming grammar can sometimes feel. We will practise it together and revisit it whenever necessary until you can use it naturally and confidently in conversation.

At the same time, I'll help you elevate your English with useful idioms, natural expressions, phrasal verbs, advanced vocabulary and features of spoken English such as ellipsis. The aim is not simply to learn more English, but to help you sound more natural, flexible and confident when communicating.

Of course, we can also work on pronunciation, helping you become clearer and more comfortable when speaking.

I have a huge range of resources at my fingertips, including:

Real-life role plays and scenarios
Speaking games and interactive activities
Authentic texts and articles
Listening and discussion tasks
Vocabulary-building activities
Conversation practice based on topics that genuinely interest you

Most importantly, I will listen carefully to your goals, your challenges and the way you enjoy learning. Your lessons will be tailored to you.

If you need English for the workplace, I can offer additional insight and support. Before becoming an English language teacher, I spent ten years working in journalism and public relations, so I understand the importance of communicating clearly, professionally and confidently.

About the lesson

My lessons are fun, very interactive and a safe space to make mistakes and grow. They last one hour using Microsoft Teams and during this time I will iron out any issues with grammar using gentle correction. The focus is on elevating your English with advanced vocabulary, expressions, phrasal verbs, collocations and idioms.

I have a vast library of resources and a deep understanding of how to take intermediate English speakers to advanced level. Confidence is just as important as grammar and very quickly your self-assurance will soar with my expert guidance.

I have lots of experience coaching students successfully for the IELTS/C1 speaking tests and can recreate the exam format and provide lots of help with, for example, structuring answers to maximise marks, hesitation devices and dealing with unfamiliar questions.

If you need English for the workplace you may be interested to hear that I had a ten-year career in journalism and public relations - so I can offer professional level advice and support.
