About the lesson

I have a strong ability to connect with children and engage them in their learning quickly. I offer tutoring in English language and literature (ages 11-16 and A Level dependent on texts and Exam Board). I also offer Mindsets Mentoring to build confidence and resilience through a structured programme.
I am an Examiner for AQA GCSE English Language and Literature and am able to coach for exam technique.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE (KS3, GCSE and A Level)
My teaching is rooted in understanding how each individual learns. When a misconception arises, my aim is not simply to correct the answer but to identify why it has occurred. A mistake may stem from: a gap in prior knowledge; a misunderstanding of the concept; a memory retrieval difficulty; an error in expression; misreading the question; stress/anxiety; lack of confidence; or simply working too quickly. Each of these needs a different teaching approach. By identifying the underlying cause, I can adapt my teaching so that progress is both meaningful and lasting.

I prepare a full hour of content but will adapt as necessary. I incorporate low-stakes testing, as well as diagnostic assessments as we go along so that learning time is maximised to strengthen the foundations of what students know but also build on it at the right pace so that progress is seen quickly. My students find my way of working hugely motivating as they see success quickly and get hungry for more!

MINDSET MENTORING - RESILIENCE AND CONFIDENCE BUILDING
I also offer a 6-8 week mindset programme. This is about resilience and confidence building. The programme is designed to give young people practical skills they can use when navigating worries, setbacks, friendships, difficult emotions and those times when their own thinking can make a situation feel even harder. Across the sessions, we will explore things such as:
• understanding the connection between thoughts, feelings and behaviour
• recognising unhelpful patterns of thinking
• learning to question thoughts rather than automatically believing them
• looking at situations from different perspectives
• managing worry and catastrophic thinking
• building confidence and self-belief
• coping with setbacks and difficult emotions
• communicating needs and feelings more confidently
Sessions will be relaxed, practical and personalised to the young person, using conversation, activities, games, scenarios and reflection rather than feeling like another lesson.
This is not counselling or therapy, and it isn't about telling young people simply to "think positively". The aim is to help you understand yourself and your thinking better and develop practical strategies for handling everyday challenges with greater confidence and flexibility.
