About Sophya

I am a dedicated educator and trained chemist who brings a rich blend of deep subject expertise and formal teaching experience to every student I tutor. I hold a B.S. in Chemistry from California State University, Fullerton, an M.S. in Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and an M.Ed. in Secondary Education from West Chester University, alongside holding a Pennsylvania teaching certificate in grades 7–12 Science and Chemistry. This background in both chemistry and education allows me to demystify complex scientific concepts and make advanced subject matter intuitive and accessible.
My passion for mentorship spans a wide range of academic levels and learning environments. I began my educational career tutoring students in subjects ranging from 3rd-grade mathematics to AP Chemistry, later leading supplemental instruction sessions and serving as an adjunct chemistry instructor at the local community college. During my graduate studies at UW–Madison, I guided university chemistry students through problem sets and laboratory analyses. More recently, I have worked as a high school science teacher in The School District of Philadelphia, where I specialized in adapting curricula to meet the unique needs of diverse learners. I am currently an adjunct faculty member in the chemistry department at the Community College of Philadelphia. Through specialized training in supporting all learners and developing engaging academic coursework, I excel at helping students build genuine confidence in STEM subjects. Whether we are working through foundational math, high school chemistry, or advanced college-level coursework, my goal is to create a supportive, structured environment where you can develop strong problem-solving skills, curiosity, and long-term academic success.

About the lesson

I start each lesson by checking in with the learner about what they would like to focus on for that session. Then, we quickly devise a plan of action for how to address your needs in the time we have. This can include receiving a lesson from me to introduce or review a topic. We can work on any homework assignments you are struggling with. We can also do other practice problems to help deepen your understanding of what you are learning. My lessons can be tailored to students of any age who are interested in learning chemistry, or math. My adaptability and responsiveness to student needs are what set me apart as a great tutor for anybody.
