About Katherine
Hi there! My name is Katie and I am currently in university for my bachelor's degree in classical music performance and I love to share practice tips, favorite musicians, and study inspiration. When I am not glued to my practice chair, I love to go on nature hikes, see local bands, and learn new languages. I have experimented with many different genres of guitar and I like to think that this has given my teaching style a well-rounded approach. Whenever a student wants to change things up and switch directions, I love presenting different genres and playing styles. I have been playing guitar since I was 12 years old and I fell in love with it immediately. I have had many pitfalls in my personal music journey over the years such as stage anxiety, injuries from over-practicing, and wasting valuable practice time by practicing ineffectively. It is a great joy to me to share these experiences with my students to help them avoid those same mistakes! Everyone has different goals and priorities when it comes to learning an instrument. My role as a teacher is to help you achieve your goals, not push my expectations onto you.

Music is my passion and I believe that lessons should be tailored to focus on what each student finds interesting and motivating about guitar. It is most rewarding to continue practicing when what you are learning is interesting to you. Part of our lesson will always be focused on technique and making sure that the way you are playing guitar will be healthy for your body in the long term, but this generally takes about 5-10 minutes. The rest of the lesson can be spent on learning new chords for a song you love, learning to read sheet music so you can play along to your favorite jazz charts, or whatever else interests you.
