About Naomi

Ever since I watched ‘Educating Essex’ 6 years ago, I have not been able to shake off the prospect of being a teacher. Seeing the impact of a caring and committed teacher was something that inspired and excited me to become that role model. I am drawn to the pastoral side of teaching, and believe that my calm, approachable manner will be that which welcomes students into a safe space which may in fact be the only one available to them. Secondary school years are those with great significance in a student’s life, and I look forward to being an encouraging figure, as well as an committed teacher who inspires students to develop both academically and personally.

Mathematics has never been an easy topic for me, especially through A level. I found the first module extremely difficult and was ready to give up, however, encouragement from my teacher along with my parents pushed me to carry on and complete the course and continue onto degree level. I see this experience as a positive contribution to my teaching as I am able to genuinely empathize with those struggling and encourage them. The positive feeling of pride after reaching the correct answer or finally understanding a concept is that which draws me towards the subject and is what I hope to lead my students towards. I look forward to encouraging students to take pride in their knowledge and skills, focusing on individual progress rather than comparison and plain grades.

About the lesson

I am a calm and approachable young teacher, with the overall aim to build individual's confidence in their mathematical ability. Depending on student's goals, lessons may vary slightly in order to tailor to individual ways of learning and areas of focus - in general, lessons will last between 40 ad 50 minutes.
I have taught in a secondary school for 2 years, and can proudly say have built strong relationships with students, based on mutual respect. Students respond well to my reassuring manner and in turn, their confidence (and academic achievement) in their mathematical ability have reached new heights.
I believe in the importance of focusing on individual progress rather than comparison to others, while still appreciating how the system works and the importance of comparable grades, especially when it comes to GCSE level.
My particular experience has been with those aged 11 - 16, however, I believe there is value in Maths specialism within the primary sector, therefore am offering tuition to those aged 8 and above, as well as those post 16 focusing on functional skills.
