About Artur
I am Artur Akshelyan, a composer and educator who loves teaching and working closely with students. I enjoy sharing my experience with those interested in music composition, improvisation, songwriting, music theory, and piano, and I aim to create a supportive and inspiring environment where each student can develop their own artistic voice.
My music explores lyricism and dynamism, often shaped by memory and multicultural experience. It has been performed by leading ensembles such as the Lemanic Modern Ensemble, Ensemble Intercontemporain, Ensemble Contrechamps, Trio Saeitenwind, the Arditti Quartet, Nouvel Ensemble Moderne, Ensemble Divertimento, Ensemble Maja, and the Basel Symphony Orchestra, among others. I have also received commissions from institutions and ensembles including Radio France (Paris), County Hall Arts (London), Dresdner Sinfoniker, Boston New Music Initiative, Ensemble Contrechamps (Geneva), the Orpheus Competition (Zurich), the UCLA Armenian Music Program, Ensemble Vertigo, Festival Flagey (Brussels), and others.
My work has been recognized with several international awards, including Second Prize at the Basel Composition Competition, the Grand Prix at the Geneva Composition Competition, Honorable Mention at Gaudeamus Muziekweek, and more recently the Left Coast Composition Contest (USA) and the 12th Annual Commissioning Competition by the Boston New Music Initiative.
Alongside composing, I work as a conductor, having collaborated with Ensemble Assonance and Ensemble Polymorphia. I have taught at the American University of Armenia and the Yerevan State Conservatory, and since 2023 I have been based in the United States, where I completed my doctorate at Florida State University.
