About Jamie

Hi there!

My name's Jamie and I am about to start my second year at Loughborough University studying Computer Science!
I'm loving my time studying so far and I want to share the knowledge I have developed with others as I know they are very challenging subjects. This is not a bad thing however because I believe that if you don't challenge yourself then you will not develop as much as a person.

I like a laugh and some banter - I may be a Computer Scientist but that does not make me a robot! I also stay on track to the topic of focus but if there is other information that may aid understanding then I can branch into that area as well to link it to the focus topic.

I have worked on a Casual basis at a leisure center as a Lifeguard since 2018 and I now work as a Relief-Manager for the building when needed so I have lots of front-facing experience and I have been put in all sorts of different situations with all sorts of different people!

At Secondary School I was the football team Captain from Year 9, a College Captain in Years 10 and 11 and in Sixth Form I was Head Boy.

I have a current DBS certificate through my employment and references can be made if required.

The key concept that made me successful at GCSE and A-Level is the idea around exam-style questions.

I know! The same old cliche coming around again and again and I'm sure teachers are ramming it down students' throats as much as possible! Unfortunately, they seem to have a point but it needs to be done in the right way. This means doing a paper independently or with limited notes/ tips; work through the mark-schemes for the papers and interact with it.

Whilst I want to focus on questions where possible I will also ask students to highlight key areas where they think that they need the most improvement so we can cover content for those areas hopefully in a different way to how a teacher may do it in order to provide another way of thinking about the area to help the content 'click' into place - there is no better feeling in school when you're doing something really difficult and all of a sudden you just exclaim "Ohhhhhhhhhhhh I get it now" and that bit of information or way of solving is now a walk in the park!

Nowadays school is all about how to pass your exams and teachers drag on about "exam technique" rather than actually teaching students. I want my students to not only pass their exams but smash their arbitrary 'Target Grades' set by a computer that only sees numbers and not a student! Even more importantly I want my students to enjoy learning the knowledge and skills that they will hopefully use when they move on from school.

I prefer my sessions to be around an hour long but if the student wishes to work for longer than or slightly less then that is fine as long as the work ethic is there!

I have achieved a Grade A in Mathematics, Computer Science, and Psychology at A-Level. I was lucky enough to be in the first cohort of students in the country to be taking the reformed GCSE system meaning I got the '9-1 numbers' grades rather than the 'A-F letters' which is important because (hopefully) I will have done the exact course that you will be doing!

I have had no prior experience as a tutor however I have done some work experience at a primary school working alongside teachers and I would love to add to that!
