About Sara
Conversation and Communication Skills are my profession.
Learning to hear and sense what someone means underneath what they say, is a skill most don’t learn in their native language, let alone in another language. That’s why the combination of my therapeutic skills and ESL teaching experience bring a uniquely rich benefit to advancing your language skills and expression, across all areas of life.
I qualified with the Cambridge CELTA in 1997 and have taught English as a second language in Australia, Japan, Vietnam, Ghana and the UK, working as a course developer and teacher trainer alongside classroom teaching. I have also worked professionally in the therapeutic field since 1998, with talking therapy a constant. It ran alongside Shiatsu and Chinese medicine, alongside somatic healing bodywork, later in my private practice as a BACP registered psychotherapeutic counsellor.
Across nearly thirty years I have worked in person, and online with people of all ages and from most continents, from the Arab States to the African continent, Japan and Korea, European countries to China, India and South east Asia, The US and South America, notably: with HNW (high net worth) individuals and their families, including royalty on cultural awareness and language acquisition, professionals working in diplomatic, financial, aviation, medical, military and international development roles.
Throughout, I have assisted people with relational skills to read a person accurately, meeting them at the right depth. Knowing when to go further in conversation, when to keep it light, when to delve deep and when humour works well. My work as a couples counsellor has presented me with significant opportunities with cross-cultural individuals and couples, and my ESL experience has assisted me to help them navigate language and cultural expression barriers.
I was born in the UK and grew up in a strongly multicultural part of Australia, shaped by European, Vietnamese, Chinese, African, Middle Eastern and Asian communities. I lived 5 years in Japan, studying Shiatsu and Aikido with a Japanese master, and shorter periods in Vietnam and Ghana. I have travelled extensively around the world, returning to the UK in 2003. I know from the inside what it takes to live and work immersed in a foreign language and culture.
I love getting to know the essence of a person, and conversing of subjects as diverse as DIY projects, cycling, travel, culture, psychology, health, ancient philosophy, world religions, quantum physics and yes, politics!, to name but a few areas.
I am based in Chelsea and teach in person in central and west London, and online worldwide.

Most learners stall between intermediate and advanced for reasons that have very little to do with language. They stall on their own self-inhibiting attitudes, a fear of sounding foolish, or keep choosing the safer language expression.
You'll experience lessons that put relationship at the heart of your communication experience, offering not only grammar and vocabulary advance, but communication skills support that settles any anxiety, and boosts confidence to enter any situation you need to speak English in, from everyday functional needs, communication between intimate partners and friends of different cultures, to high level business presentations and events.
Every session is shaped around your goals, your interests and the language acquisition relevant to you. You’ll already have a foundation in English grammar and speaking, but our aim is to expand on this, with use of idiomatic language, advanced grammar application and nuanced spoken ability with cultural awareness.
KEY LESSON FEATURES
• Building your confidence to speak, which for most intermediate and advanced learners is the real barrier
• Extending your vocabulary and idiomatic range across professional, business, academic, and social contexts
• Correcting grammar and expression during flow of conversation, so fluency is not broken
• Reading and using register: knowing when to be formal, warm, direct, tentative, humorous
• Understanding British courtesy, culture and humour, including irony, understatement and the criticism delivered as a mild suggestion
• Working across British, Australian, American and Canadian English, where a phrase that lands as welcomed in one lands as blunt or disrespectful in another
• Preparing specific situations: a presentation, a negotiation, an interview, a difficult meeting, or a social occasion you are may be anxious about
• Reviewing what happened afterwards, so real events and life in general become material
You can practise English with an app, and yes, it will be patient, available 24/7, and well versed on every grammatical technicality. But living language communicated between people is an evolving and exciting dance, the small adjustments you make as you read the person in front of you, the risk of saying something that might not be received well, how to repair a rupture should it land wrong, that is what advances your language application. The magic is in the application! And we get straight into it from the moment we meet.
