About Joey

I started Joey Music Loft because, as a child, I once disliked going for piano lessons. I remember dreading them and feeling stressed about grades and exams. I was often told to work towards the next grade, and over time I began to wonder if I was even musical at all. Music felt like pressure rather than joy. That changed when I met Teacher C. She helped me see music in a completely different way. She taught me that musicality is not about how fast you progress or how many grades you achieve. It is about understanding, expression, and connection. One thing she said has stayed with me ever since. If a child does not understand what a teacher is teaching, the child should not be blamed. It is the teacher’s responsibility to find a better way to teach. That belief shapes everything I do at Joey Music Loft. I believe every child can learn music when they are taught with patience, care, and understanding. Every student learns differently, and it is my role as a teacher to notice their needs, adapt my approach, and support them at their own pace. Progress looks different for every child, and that is okay. Joey Music Loft was created to be a safe and encouraging space where students can enjoy learning music without fear or pressure. My hope is that every child leaves lessons feeling more confident, more curious, and more connected to music than when they arrived.

About the lesson

At Joey Music Loft, I focus first on helping students feel safe, encouraged, and confident. I have extensive experience working with students of diverse learning needs, including dyslexic and autistic learners, and have previously served as a relief teacher in MOE schools. These experiences have shaped my patient, flexible, and empathetic teaching style.

My lessons are child centred and thoughtfully structured, while remaining warm and adaptable. I do not judge a child by their current ability, but by the potential I see in them. Lessons are tailored to each student, using playful, story-based activities for young beginners and sensory-friendly approaches for students who need them. I also offer music exploration lessons for children from age 2, encouraging early curiosity through movement and play.

Lessons typically last 30–45 minutes.

I hold an ABRSM Grade 8 Piano qualification and am currently pursuing a Diploma in Teaching Music. One of my proudest moments was guiding a Grade 3 student to achieve Distinction in ABRSM, while keeping the learning journey positive and enjoyable. I continue to grow as a musician through regular performances, which enrich my teaching.

Above all, I believe music is about joy, expression, and confidence. At Joey Music Loft, my goal is to nurture both strong piano foundations and a lasting love for music.
