About Alanna

Hi! I'm Alanna, nice to virtually meet you! I have a master's degree in Human Biology from UIndy and am a current PhD student at CU Boulder studying molecular neuroscience, integrative physiology, and behavioral genetics ( ️I clearly love science). You can find a few reviews of my teaching on Rate My Professor (UIndy), for anatomy and physiology courses. I was an instructor in Indiana for 3 years then I returned to Colorado to do cancer research at CU Anschutz prior to starting my current graduate program. Within my current program, I have been a graduate teaching assistant for a year, a physiology lab, and a second year teaching a cadaver anatomy lab. I was also a teaching assistant all throughout my undergraduate and master's degree programs. I'm also a mother of two, both of my kids are current college students as well. One is pre-med for neuropsych, the other is a chemistry major with a goal of becoming a pharmacist. I have a dog named Rosie who continues to teach me patience daily. I love teaching and plan to use my PhD to teach college biology courses!

You will see results. Yes, your grades will go up! More importantly, your understanding of the content will improve. Your frustration will go down! I can help you discover how you learn best, which can be applied to any subject matter you're studying. I can help you engage with and enjoy the material you're studying! Effective teaching and tutoring require creating a real interest in the material as well as figuring out how that material relates to you. I strive to create engagement and improve retention as well as understanding of your course material. Lessons will include the following: Summary - together we establish what the content focus of each particular session needs to be. Interactive instruction - utilizing multiple resources (hands-on, visual, and auditory) to approach the content from multiple perspectives. Questions - I employ a Socratic method of teaching with most students. I utilize a stair-step method of questioning to assess what you're grasping and to what degree. I also strongly encourage you to ask questions, especially the ones you might hesitate to ask in class or in a group setting, or that you think are silly or stupid (they aren't btw, ask me why). Wrap up - Assess the material for the active session was fully covered, all present questions and areas of confusion were addressed, ensure the content was understood, and outline a moving forward action plan. What is a moving forward action plan? This is a plan for how you will follow up with the learned content between tutoring sessions. Assessing how much more attention or work is needed on the material to master it OR to prepare you for the next lesson, OR both, as it's common for content to be built upon. Address what will be expected in the next session (if needed). Ultimately each lesson is tailored to you and your needs in the course material, as well as personal learning goals and styles.
