About Jonathan

I'm a graduate of Natural Sciences at Lancaster University where I studied maths, physics and biology. I did my first masters there specializing in Physics. I went on to do a second masters at the University of Bristol in the Philosophy of Physics.
I'm applying to be an academic coach in maths and physics.
Having studied these subjects in depth, I have learned how to truly get a deep grasp of their content and significance, and to explain them in simple terms that appeal to a student’s sense of intuition.
My degree in the philosophy of physics, has been particularly instructive in this respect.

My most unique selling point is probably expertise in maths and physics, and my ability to make complex ideas more digestible to students.
Throughout my studies at university, and indeed at school, I have always found myself most engaged when I am finding new ways of thinking about complex ideas, through analogies and examples, to make them easier to grasp, and more exciting.
In my latest degree I was particularly impressed by the work of French mathematician Henri Poincare, who was not only a great mathematician but had a knack for making complex ideas easily understood. In the early 1900’s he wrote 3 books on the foundations of science that are accessible to the general public, in which he emphasizes the importance of clarity and simplicity in science, and praises the value of the aesthetic appreciation of science.
This work, which I have conducted scholarship on over the last year of my studies, has been a big source of inspiration for me to consider a career in teaching.
I believe that many students have latent potential in science and mathematics, which needs to be encouraged out of them by connecting these abstract and daunting problems that they encounter in their homework to their intuitive capacities, and to the joy that they can feel upon understanding a scientific theory or a problem.
Now regarding relevant experience I have for the role:
While I was at school in Belgium, I was a scout, and in my last two years there I got the great opportunity to be a guide for the younger generations, and looked after young children, aged 8 to 12 on trips to the countryside and things like these, which was really enjoyable, sometimes challenging but rewarding.
At university, at Lancaster, I joined the dodgeball team and became team captain for some of the time in my last two years there. I was in charge of organising training sessions and warm-ups, and getting the players motivated and ready to play in tournaments which would usually take place in Manchester.
This gave me great experience with leading and managing young adults in this case, making sure everyone was enjoying the sessions and participating, and giving it their best.
Since I was even younger, at school, I would sometimes help my further maths teacher in her class by explaining problems to my class mates, because I tended to have a very good grasp of the material, and would find ways of expressing it through examples and analogies.
My friends would often go to me for help explaining physics problems that they were struggling with, and I had one classmate after school who would come to my house for me to give him maths tutoring before exams.

Now, throughout my studies in school and in university, explaining things in neat and intuitive ways has been one of my greatest passions; and watching kids and young adults grow and learn in my extra-curricular activities as a scout leader and dodgeball coach has been one of the most rewarding experiences for me.
I would love to bring these two skills and passions together in teaching, by giving kids the tools to find the beauty in scientific theories and mathematical problems, and unlock their interests and capacities in maths and science.
I think that I would be an ideal candidate for this role, and look forwards to this opportunity to get started with real experience teaching.
