About Jack
Hello! I am a former English Literature major and lifelong reader. I love engaging in discussions about all kinds of texts. One of the things I love most about reading is that the same words can mean an almost infinite number of things depending on the reader; as such, I approach every discussion with an open mind. I am never judgmental about what a particular passage might mean to a particular person. Employing this open-mindedness has allowed me to find success as a tutor with people of all age groups, writing refinement, and areas of interest.

I am a firm believer that teaching goes both ways: a good tutor will learn just as much from their student as the student does from the tutor. Therefore, I employ a very collaborative approach to English tutoring. I am not at all inclined to tell a student exactly what to write, or to impose my ideas about a piece of literature upon them. Rather, a typical session will be very discussion-oriented, in the hopes of extracting some important insight or thread that can be developed in writing outside of the tutoring session. I find it less helpful for the tutoring session to be merely a designated time for the student to write quietly; however, if this is the structure that best fits the student, with occasional supervision and input from me, then I am also more than happy to accommodate that style.
