About A Darryl
I am a PhD candidate in English at the University of Iowa. I am beginning my third year of coursework, specializing in Anglophone Literature from Modernism to Contemporary Era with a particular emphasis on racial identity formation. I have been a Teaching Assistant for the past two years, first as a Discussion Section Leader for Foundations of the English Major, then as the instructor-of-record for Rhetoric: Reading, Writing and Speaking, and Rhetoric: Reading and Speaking. Before graduate school, I was a high school speech/debate coach and a special needs paraeducator for Head Start; I also spent nearly twenty years working for a higher ed nonprofit. I've held a wide variety of jobs in finance, education, entertainment, transportation, human services, and healthcare. I'm the son of an elementary school guidance counselor and a high school teacher, the nephew of a middle school principal and a college professor, and the grandson of a medical school professor--I've literally grown up in and around classrooms and campuses, and I thrive on being around learners!

As we emerge from pandemic-disrupted education, many students approach later high school and college classes without having been able to practice higher-level reading, writing, and speaking skills. Asynchronous and Zoom classes can be useful and worthwhile, but often fail to provide students with necessary, one-on-one attention that can reveal areas of improvement.
Having spent the last two years as a university English and Rhetoric instructor, I understand that some students may require additional support to ensure they are able to convey their understanding of post-secondary work in a professional and academic manner.
My typical teaching method begins with establishing lines of communication with my students to determine their skill level; once we establish that baseline, I present students with a variety of texts, asking them to demonstrate their comprehension of form, content, and themes through a combination of close reading and contextual research. I ask for as much creativity as possible from my students--their ability to engage with the act of learning is as important as what they learn!
My lessons are primarily for North America-based undergraduates or high school students planning to attend college. As I am currently a PhD candidate in English, I have a particular interest in helping prospective English majors; however, my primary motivation is to ensure all undergraduates develop the skills and practices to be dynamic, engaging readers, writers and speakers at the college level.

I am comfortable teaching and tutoring online (I teach both via Zoom and in-person); I may add a surcharge if I have to drive out of the Iowa City/Coralville area.
I am occasionally able to book classrooms at certain neutral sites (48 hours' notice needed); however, students are expected to provide their own copies of any teaching materials necessary.
