About Elaine

I have a number of life experiences which I feel definitely make me a good candidate to teach English as a foreign language. As I mentioned in my introduction video I have a background in teaching. Firstly as the mother of a grade 1 learner I oversee home work every day, and am involved in my daughters education process. I'm also a yoga instructor and run my own business. I have worked mostly with an organization called Phillisa Abafazi Bethu. volunteering in the past to work with abused and underprivileged kids doing tutoring, ( math, reading,writing) working with some of the most challenging learners in the field of education, and as such understand the patience and dedication that one must have to make a positive difference through the art of instruction whatever the subject may be. Having a background in public speaking I know I have put in the effort to develop a professional, positive demeanor when engaging with others for whatever purpose. Having a background in the service industry, I have dealt with people from all walks of life and know how to tailor myself to different personalities. I can read without prompting when someone is uncomfortable or unhappy or anxious as understanding body language is imperative to working with people this of course ties in with counselling as well. I chose this career path because it meets my needs and requirements one of which is giving back. It is a personal calling to enrich the lives of others and I feel this makes a huge difference to the experience learners will receive through me. I have the life experience to handle most situations professionally and independently. As a person I am hard working and dedicated to perfection ,I have the capacity to handle the long hours (when learners are needing extra attention or alternative explanations, I will go that extra distance and think outside the box). I am able to persevere under the sometimes stressful pace of teaching with a calm and professional demeanor. I feel that I am an asset to any company as I always strive to better my work environment not only for myself but for my colleagues as well. I believe strongly in team spirit & that it is only through the betterment of the whole team, that we as individuals are in turn uplifted.

About the lesson

My teaching methods are very fluid. I believe in eliciting from students what works best for them and then tailoring my lessons to their approach to learning style as apposed to them falling in with my teaching style. I like to keep my lessons light and fun and am happy to cover a range of topics and sections of English, depending on the individual or group requirements. I like depending on restraints and requirements to discuss curriculum with students to make sure it's relevant to them as apposed to having a set syllabus which may or may not meet their specific needs.
