About Maeve

My name is Maeve Rigney, and I'm an experienced test-taker, academic writer, creative writer and social sciences graduate who is equipped to tutor in a variety of subject areas, including the ACT and PSAT, essay writing, creative writing, and political science. My teaching philosophy is that students thrive in a casual environment where conversation flows easily between student and teacher. A student thinks best when they are comfortable, and I want to foster a relaxed environment for the student. I take my job seriously and strive to invest in all the students I tutor and prime them for success.

About the lesson

Some Subjects I Teach:

ACT and PSAT: In high school, I made a 33 on the ACT (with a 36 in both English and Reading). Additionally, I was a Commended Scholar on the PSAT. To me, the ACT and the PSAT are tests that can be learned, and it's easier to learn with someone else than to learn from a book. I have some hacks for the English/Language and Reading sections of each of these tests that make them a lot less intimidating.

Essay Writing (especially for English and Social Sciences): My GPA in college was a 3.95, meaning I made an A in almost every class. I wrote an Honors Thesis, which was passed by the committee with no revisions, and one of my political science papers got extended by myself and a professor, then sent to an academic journal. I love writing essays, and I believe that essay writing is a skill that everyone can learn. If I tutor you in this subject, I'll walk you through the basics of essay writing, including thesis statements, citations, grammar conventions, and critical thinking/argumentation skills.

Creative Writing (mainly poetry but can do fiction): I am a creative writing minor who did a fifty page poetry thesis my senior year. My poems have won Mississippi State University's undergraduate poetry contest and the Joy Taylor Rieves Poetry Prize. Additionally, I was the Poetry Editor on the literary magazine for three years. I would love to work with you on your writing and provide valuable feedback and supply your with writing exercises/reading assignments, so you can work on your craft.
