About Emily

My name is Emily Winckler, and I graduated from UBC with a BA in English Literature and History (double major) in May, 2015. After graduating, I spent time in Europe researching my particular area of academic interest, working along side the Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw, the Education Centre at Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, and professors from UBC. My work was published, and took me to Sweden, where I began my Masters at Uppsala Universitat.

Upon returning to Canada, I went back to UBC and completed my BEd in Secondary Level English. I graduated from this program in August of 2017, and have been teaching English and Social Studies full time in West Vancouver since September, 2017.

I have 15+ years of experience as a tutor/teacher, beginning in high-school as a tutor of my peers in the Learning Assistance Centre, moving on to language and after-school programs, and finally settling in as a classroom teacher.

I have known I wanted to be a teacher since I was 11 years old, and it is my greatest passion!

About the lesson

Hi! I have been teaching high school English and Social Studies (grades 8-12) for 5 years now in the district of West Vancouver! As a full-time educator, I have a clear understanding of how to teach skills such as grammar use, paragraph and essay writing, analysis, and reading comprehension. I approach education in a methodical, inclusive way, meeting my students where they are in their current learning process. Before graduation, I spent many years teaching English as a Secondary Language, preparing students of all ages for their IELTS and TOEFL exams, as well as tutoring primary school aged students through Oxford Learning in Kerrisdale and Kitsilano.

My typical lesson plan will vary depending on the individual student's level, as I will start by identifying which areas they need instruction, feedback, and practice in. In our sessions, I will provide classroom-tested activities along with my instruction to ensure the student has an opportunity to practice the skill we are working on while I am present to give tips and feedback. If you wish, I will provide assignments that can be completed between sessions, which we will go over and edit together in our following sessions. I believe that learning happens in the process of drafting, and prioritize editing, giving feedback, and providing several opportunities for learners to re-write assignments while applying the new skills we are developing together!

I believe that positive and encouraging environments allow students to grow, and it is something that I strive to create with each one of my students!

I have a genuine love for teaching, and I look forward to working with you!
