About Jamie

I'm a recent First Class Masters graduate in Mathematics from the University of Manchester, with an average of over 80%. Prior to attending university, I worked as a maths teaching assistant in a secondary school where I helped students aged 14-18 from various sets, including GCSE resit classes. My teaching approach is flexible, adapting to the unique needs and learning styles of each student. By exploring different approaches to the subject, I have helped numerous students improve their grades and gain confidence in their mathematical abilities. Aside from my academic and teaching background, I am also a professional swimmer and won a silver medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Through my experience as a high-performance athlete, I have developed discipline, determination, and resilience, which I apply to my teaching practice. In both maths and swimming, achieving success involves setting clear objectives, breaking them down into manageable steps, and persevering through obstacles. My goal is to instil these same qualities in my students, assisting them not only in building their maths skills but also in developing their self-assurance and persistence. Whether you require help understanding a difficult concept or wish to excel in your maths studies, I am here to provide you with support and guidance along the way. Contact me today to see how we can work together to achieve your goals

As a First Class Masters graduate in Mathematics and former classroom teacher, I have helped countless students improve their maths skills and build their confidence. I use a combination of Zoom and BitPaper to deliver personalised lessons that cater to each student's unique needs and learning style. With BitPaper, students can access a digital whiteboard that captures all our work in real-time, and the link is theirs to keep forever, allowing them to review concepts and methods covered during our lessons at their own pace. My approach to teaching is grounded in the fundamental concepts and methods of mathematics, which I believe is essential for success in the subject. I provide targeted support where students need it most and aim to create an engaging and positive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and exploring new ideas. Whether you require help with a specific concept or wish to excel in your maths studies, I am here to provide you with the support and guidance you need to achieve your goals. Find out more about Jamie

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I have always enjoyed maths, it having come quickly to me as a child. As I got older I realised not everyone was like that and started to help them out in lessons, which progressed into my year of teaching, and starting tutoring during my time at university.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach maths, having experience at GCSE level, A level and functional skills. My favourite topics to teach are the pure maths sections, followed by stats. I always think that these areas can have very quick progression with students! Probably my least favourite topic is mechanics- mainly because I have to work so much harder to understand it!
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I have had many role models in teaching- particularly the ones that encouraged me to start teaching/tutoring and showed me how to explain ideas in different ways to students to find a way they understand
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

I think the qualities needed to be a successful tutor are a strong knowledge of the subject, patience, both in explanation and waiting for the student to process it, and adaptability to be able to change the lesson plan based on how the student is responding to the lesson
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I remember in GCSEs at school being sat next to a girl that was struggling with the pace of the top set lessons. I helped her in the lessons and with revision and she ended up getting an A*! (And then an A at A level). This was the time that I realised how rewarding seeing someone else do well that I know I had a role in.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

The difficulties I have in maths have mainly been as the level increased. I have had to try to understand the material thoroughly, rather than just learning methods and being good at passing exams. I think that doing the tutoring now has helped with the understanding, which I can now pass onto my students.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I don't have a particular passion area. I just enjoy the results of my students, and the pride they feel when they achieve or surpass their goals.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P) ?

I am a Superprof because I have a strong knowledge of the subject, I am patient in both delivery and waiting for the students to understand. I also have many resources for questions, or the lessons so I am able to change direction whenever it's needed!
