About Gary

I started tutoring fellow students while in school. I found it was something I enjoyed. But more importantly the students I tutored had positive results and told others of their experience.

Bachelors of Science degree from the University of Delaware. Deans list 6 semesters.

Tutored online through tutor.com for 2 years in Economics. Trained on tutoring techniques such as questions to ask student to verify learning and many scenarios a tutor can encounter such as how to respond to frustrated students. Passed subject matter test to prove mastery of subject matter and received positive reviews on both subject matter expertise and tutoring technique.

International experience tutoring college students in Australia when studied abroad.

Tutored family members, friends and fellow students locally with positive results shown in grades.

About the lesson

I first introduce myself and get a dialogue going with student to understand his or her goals to accomplish with tutoring. I also like to ask some general questions regarding what current understanding of subject is and find any potential pain points up front to avoid any unnecessary frustration due to misunderstanding goals of student. Adjust tutoring technique based on level of student comprehension. For example, some students have good grasp on subject matter but have particulary difficult assignment they need extra help with whereas other students feel completely lost. It is important to make sure student is following you by asking questions of the student to make sure the tutor is not just providing answers but letting the student feel they are with you in getting the answer. I find following these methods results in more confident students. Confidence is a key factor I find in determing student comprehension of the work.

Primarily high school and undergrad college students recently. However, I have tought elementary and middle school students as well in math/science disciplines.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should know what they are looking to accomplish. Is the goal to just get help with a particularly difficult assignment? Or is there difficulty in the subject overall and need help over time to master subject?
