About Judah
My name is Judah Renshaw, founder and head tutor of Tactical Tutoring in Athens, Tennessee. I graduated from McMinn County High School with honors, distinction and 33 on the ACT in 2019, completing junior and senior year as well as my first semester of college all in the same year. After moving to Michigan for college, I returned to Athens, married my high school sweetheart, and started a family!
After noticing a lack of secondary mathematics tutors in our community, I decided to start Tactical Tutoring!
I have 3 years of experience running Tactical Tutoring and an additional 4 years of experience with Varsity Tutors.
My ACT prep students have all improved their scores by more than 5 points (composite)! My primary goal is to help each student successfully obtain (and redefine if currently lackluster) their academic goals. At times, students need to rediscover their curiosity. I can help them work past frustration to refocus and/or differentiate other blocks to learning. Furthermore, I am open to input and working with guardians/teachers. I am committed to empowering students with the skills and confidence they need to excel academically and beyond.
Every year of my schooling I have been asked to tutor or otherwise assist my peers and underclassmen academically. And all my life I have assisted my mother in the homeschooling of my younger siblings.
I am an undergrad, seeking a degree in secondary mathematics education. I have a strong understanding of most middle and high school material, a 33 composite on the ACT, and over 5 years of experience tutoring.
( I had the opportunity to graduate from high school a year early and a 33 composite ACT qualified me for the presidential scholarship at my chosen university. I would have loved to have taken more ACTs to improve my score, but I prioritized getting a year ahead over staying behind and perfecting my ACT score)

My first step is always to get to know my students, learn what they love to do and integrate that into what they need to do. After that I like to set long and short term goals, help students to reach those goals with individually handpicked learning tools to ensure their engagement and academic success.
I work with grades 6-12.
I have worked with gifted students who were bored out of there minds with school and needed something more challenging. I have also tutored students who were so far behind that they couldn't even imagine understanding any of the concepts that their teachers were trying to ram into their heads let alone get caught up on their schoolwork. I have also helped students that just needed a little bit more one on one that they aren't getting from their teacher.
I have worked with students with manic depression, ADHD, ADD, and autism.
Most recently I have been helping students who are preparing to go to college improve their ACT scores. Every single one of my students has improved with each retest and most have gained 5 points or more.
I had a student struggling to understand how multiplying a negative number by another negative number could yield a positive result. I explained by standing up and jumping to turn 180 degrees and then jumping 180 degrees again to show that when you multiply by one negative, you flip the sign, so if you multiply by another negative, you flip the sign again. This demonstration finally seemed to solidify the concept in her head.

This guy helped me raise my ACT score by 5 points and is the reason over half my college education is paid for by scholarships
