About Ian

In 2016, I founded Yellow Sun | Art Studios to empower a love for knowledge that inspires participants to realize their full potential. I envision a world where arts education is fully recognized for its transformative power, and every day I work to change perspectives and enable people to see the world around them in a more positive light.

Since receiving my BA in Arts, Illustration in 2008, I have taught more than 250 public art classes and my art has been featured internationally, virtually and in print. For the past 6 years I have intentionally been partnering with various non-profits and government entities to increase the positive community impact of my work and abilities. As the eldest of 6 children, in a single-mother household, I grew up with the responsibility of looking after and mentoring my younger siblings. In addition, as an adult I continued to realize my passion for sharing the arts by establishing a safe place in my home studio for friends and family to play music and experiment with drawing, painting, and printmaking. I finally found my voice as a teaching, performing artist for the popular company, Paint Nite, where I led large classes of novice and experienced artist.

I graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire with a BA in Arts, Illustration, with an emphasis in studio arts and a personal interest in the Humanities.

I taught public painting lessons for the international "paint and sip" company Paint Nite, and subsequently founded my own art education platform, Yellow Sun | Art Studios.

Since 2016, I have intentionally worked with non-profits and government entities to better utilize my creative abilities to support positive community development.

About the lesson

In the beginning, I listen and observe to understand each students basic interests, experiences, and abilities. Then, I curate a lesson plan that will enable them to achieve their personal goals. My objective is to ensure that the student feels empowered as an artist and can relate their achievements to greater abilities.

I have taught more than 250 public classes for greater than 7,000 total students. Through my community centered work, I have collaborated to develop age-appropriate afterschool programming at the Boys & Girls Club and as a Peace Corps Youth Development Volunteer in Amazonas, Peru. I believe my professional experiences have equiped me with the necessary skillset to effectly work with a variety of individuals from different cultural contexts, backgrounds, and communication styles.

If a student wants to improve, the best practice is to observe the world around them and draw, draw, draw. There are a number of "tips and tricks" that can help someone become a better painter very quickly, and a teacher will save you time by sharing this knowledge. I believe the best way to learn is as a member of a group where successes and challenges are shared fluidly through the conversations and activities. If you can organize a learning circle, this is the best scenario.

Details

For an individual purchasing one class at a time, my standard rate is $30/hour.

There is a gradual descent in pricing per student when 1) individuals purchase multiple classes upfront, or 2) organize learning groups and teams.

When classes are in person, costs may be considered for travel.
