About Philip

I became a woodworker after studying sculpture at the SMFA. While I am always interested in sculpture and painting, I also enjoy working on high end projects for customers who need my design skills applied to practical things, like kitchens, and furniture. I have always taken on challenges in this regard. The pay is good and I don't have to deal with the art world. Teaching has served over many years to balance my life and provide an opportunity to keep learning.

Every project teaches me something. I enjoy learning new skills and finding better ways to do something. My work has been varied over a range of activities. You can see a lot of my sculpture on my website: (concealed information)

I taught drawing classes at the AVA gallery in Lebanon, NH at their request, over 20 years ago. Subsequently, I developed my own classes and after that I taught at the Boston Architectural College. This has always been interspersed with my working life.

Degree in Fine Arts from Tufts and the Boston Museum School.

About the lesson

My focus is more on design and developing content so I don't care to work with beginners. There are group lessons for that. I need to see some work to know if I can be helpful. Also, I need to pose some simple questions to help a student set realistic goals, areas to explore, and determine what skils need to be developed towards those ends.

The recent Matisse show at the MFA: Matisse in the Studio.

Matisse has always been an artist I admired and tried to learn from, just as his life was focussed on learning and exploring.

This is a very important show for the light that it throws on his methods and inspirations.
