About Lizzie

Hi Everyone,

Thank you for your interest in art lessons with me. I have experience teaching art at the College level, through Community Education,(Elementary aged) and out of my home for variety of ages, (Elementary aged, HS, and adults.

Unfortunately, I have recently moved and will not have my studio set up until possibly summer of 2024, or possibly Fall. I have held a part time job in the past and am currently interviewing for a new position in the west metro. I live with my family ,( my Art College student son is attending on campus classes and living at home in his Junior/Senior year as an Animation major, (pursuing his B.F.A.) I hope to offer "in person" lessons, this summer or Fall, since I am not set up for virtual teaching at this time.

When I am once again " open for business", I will offer

drawing for beginners and beyond. I work in watercolor and acrylic. I'm familiar with working in oils and other physical media (pastels, gouache) and the principles of drawing and painting that I teach cross over to any media that a student wants to work in.

When older students are beginning, I use the fantastic book, "Drawing from the Right Side of the Brain", by Betty Edwards, as a means to understand how to "see" as an artist. The ways that students can learn to train their hands to draw what they are seeing, uses a method that engages their right side of the brain, rather than the left side, (which translates seeing symbols...whereas the right side, translates seeing shapes.) I highly recommend this book for beginning artists. I also like to help younger artists, that engage with their right brain more easily, (typically before the age of 11 or 12) by giving assignments that encourage using a variety of media: drawing with pencils, crayons, markers and paints, collage, ( paper, cut magazine pictures, glue, and sometimes natural elements such as leaves, sticks, and other found objects, ) paints of various kinds. I enjoy having younger artists do assignments based on their experiences and their world.

I always encourage all artists to study and copy (for instructional purposes only) the work of the old masters. This is a great way to learn how artists painted through the ages, and will also help students see how many principles used in the past are currently used in all sorts of ways in art and architecture.

My goal as a teaching artist is to help students really learn the concepts of seeing as an artist sees, and then help them translate that into their own drawing and painting. I want them to do more than just copy a painting one time. (nothing wrong with this, but I want to instill the confidence of knowing how to see first, and then use their learned skills to create the work that they envision.) I strongly encourage my students to draw FROM LIFE first. By drawing what they see in front of them, they are more likely to engage their right brains, and will have the same experience that one gets when exercising, such as swimming or long walks. The practice of drawing from life allows the artist to lose themselves in the process of their creating. This is good for the drawing itself, and also good for the soul.

About the lesson

I typically ask a student to keep a sketch book, and based on age and experience of the student, I may recommend supplies, but usually to start, I recommend they bring their sketchbooks, 11X14 or larger, and a few pencils, pens and a kneaded eraser.

I am currently teaching "in person" only out of my home.

My pricing is based on a $30.00/hour rate, so the set price per lesson is figured out based on the length of time per lesson.

A discount may apply if a student is committed to 10 lessons or more.
